Job description

About the Community Outreach Coordinator position

We are looking for a dynamic Community Outreach Coordinator with community organizing skills who will help the Co-op build membership, foster member engagement and and develop community relationships. The Coordinator will work with and report to the Project Manager.

The Community Outreach Coordinator organizes the Co-op’s outreach efforts, participation in events, partnerships with community organizations, and internal and external education about our co-op and cooperatives in general through a food sovereignty lens. The Coordinator is aligned with the Co-op’s mission and core values and promotes them in all outreach efforts, and holds the value of consensus-based leadership as central to their work. The Coordinator works collaboratively to establish, enhance, coordinate and maintain all member services and benefits to assure growth, awareness and communication between members, the Co-op’s Council, and the broader community. Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.


Responsibilities

Membership Growth and Community Outreach - 60%

  • Recruit & oversee volunteers for events

  • Build relationships with community members

  • Generate and implement a neighborhood outreach plan

  • Reach membership goals of 1,500 members at opening, including 300 solidarity share members

  • Offer education about cooperatives in general, and the Kingston Food Co-op specifically

  • Work with Co-op staff and Council members to develop programming intersecting food sovereignty, and racial, gender & class equity.

  • Create and facilitate community feedback opportunities

  • Write and send weekly newsletters

  • Post regularly on social media according to marketing plan.

Member Coordination - 40%

  • Build a sense of ownership of the Co-op among members through the use of member events, education, and other means.

  • Maintain member database

  • Coordinate and attend working group meetings

  • Stay up to date on member communications

Our ideal candidate will have:
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, racial, gender and class equity.

  • Knowledge of or commitment to learn about Kingston’s food landscape.

  • Some experience in food systems advocacy, food sovereignty, or community organizing with marginalized communities

  • High degree of comfort working with community members from varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

  • Interpersonal skills, community building, public speaking, and conflict mediation skills.

  • Ability to attend evening and weekend meetings and events.


Application Timeline

Applications will remain open until we have found a suitable candidate. We expect that interviews with our Hiring Committee and Council will be held in September and October. 

Compensation

This is a full-time position. The salary is $43,000-45,000 based on experience. We offer medical benefits.

Typical Working Conditions

This position is a work-from-home position while the Co-op is in the start-up phase. The Coordinator will need to be comfortable organizing and attending in-person events to promote the Co-op. We take seriously our commitment to limiting COVID-19 risk for our community members by following safety protocols.

Duration of Employment

The position will be in place at least until the store opens, starting with a one-year contract. The position will be reassessed when the store opens.
