Job description

We are seeking a diligent and inspired leader with strong farming, Jewish education, and relationship skills to join Eden Village Camp as our Educational Farm Director. 

Our farm is based on permaculture, regenerative and organic ethos. We grow diversified vegetables, flowers, fruit trees and tend to bees, chickens and goats. We use the farm to teach Jewish values to 450 campers a summer. As part of the Program Team, you will manage the farm staff, the Farm Educator Apprenticeship, camp programs, year-round programming, and farm program curriculum; you will assist the Management team with developing and implementing the ongoing strategy of the farm program. You will work closely with and be trained by the Assistant Director. You will serve as a leader in the Spring, Summer, and Fall communities, working to support our entire staff.   In the winter months, you will plan next season's farm, recruit next season's apprentices, and assist the Program Team and Management Team with programs and camper recruitment. 

 

The Educational Farm Director: 

  • Manages Eden Village’s farm-to-table curriculum
  • Manages Eden Village’s 3 acre farm and animal program
  • Supervises the seasonal farm educator apprentices and seasonal farm staff
  • Focalizes and leads the off-season live-in community at camp in the Spring and Fall
  • Oversees the educational programs on the farm, in the summer and during the Spring & Fall
  • Lives and works at Eden Village in Putnam Valley, NY (1 hour from NYC)

You have:

  • Love Jewish Camp! Love Farming! Love Teaching! 
  • Passionate about Eden Village Camp mission; ability to derive meaning from the work and support the vision
  • Experience managing staff in a professional capacity 
  • Experience training staff in a professional capacity
  • Three seasons of farming experience; experience working with livestock (bees, chickens, goats)
  • Clear communication and ability to supervise post-college adults and children
  • Ability to work alone and be self-guided
  • Ability to problem-solve and step into many different roles as needed
  • Ability to lift more than 50 pounds
  • Ability to sustain long and dynamic days for the growing season and especially during the summer camp period (~10 weeks)
  • Experience with nature, farm, garden, or other JOFEE education
  • Ability to manage timelines, budgets, and project management administrative tasks
  • High levels of curiosity and the desire to take initiative to learn new things
  • Capacity to make Eden Village Camp a warm and inviting place to be
  • At least 3 years of professional experience and 2-3 seasons of farming experience

 

The Team:

  • Assistant Director: Supervises all program staff, curriculum, and programs
  • Director of Teen & Young Adult Programs: Supervises the Farm Education Coordinator and the Farm Educator Apprenticeship
  • Assistant Farm Director: Camp will hire a second farm staff in early Spring 2021 to complement the Educational Farm Director. The second staff member will have one of the below roles, based on the best compliment to the skill set of the Educational Farm Director. This staff member will be supervised by the Educational Farm Director.
    • Farm Education Coordination: Managing all the educational programs on the farm; the farm educator apprentices; and the educational and experiential training of the farm educator apprentices; part of the Farm Crew
    • Farm Management: Manages the farm, orchard, animals, compost system, and all growing spaces; Manages the farm labor of the farm crew
  • Farm Educator Apprentices (3-4, May to October): In residence at Eden Village from May to October; learning farming skills, the Eden Village farm educator curriculum and pedagogy, teaching daily during summer camp, part of the Farm Crew

 

Housing: On-site housing provided though not required during the year. On-site housing is required while camp is in session. Remote work options are available in the non-farm season, including at our West Philly office.
 

Salary & Benefits: We offer a competitive salary and benefits package. Total compensation for those meeting the posted job qualifications including salary and a housing allocation is approximately $4o,000. Staff members also receive health benefits of more than $6,000, which cover medical, vision, dental, and more. Generous leave policies include more than five weeks of paid time days off per year.

 

Hiring Timeline: Eden Village will be accepting applications on a rolling basis beginning October 1, 2020 and continuing until the position is filled. Expected start date is still to be determined based on funding, but no later than Feb 1, 2021 and as early as November 1, 2020. COVID-19: Potential applicants should be aware that precautions as a result of the coronavirus pandemic will require significant adaptability and flexibility. Eden Village is preparing for the likelihood of operating as a closed campus for the Summer 2021 season. Applicants should be prepared to spend at least ten consecutive weeks in residence at camp without visitors or outside visits during June-August 2021.
