Arrowine & Cheese is located in Arlington, Virginia. The position of “Beermonger” (Beer Department Manager, Beer Buyer) is responsible for all aspects of our beer program including department management, purchasing, and merchandising.

 

Order, replenish, and merchandise packaged and draft beer with a strong focus on craft, specialty import, and local offerings. Other responsibilities include writing and editing a weekly beer sales newsletter and posting when appropriate on social media. An educational column in local paper Arlington Now is also required of The Beermonger, this is published every other week. The Beermonger will perform all functions related to breaking down deliveries, moving back stock to floor, and merchandising new products and stocking shelves. Organizing and developing displays, maintaining inventories, and providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service to customers and team members. An ability to work independently managing a “store within a store” is a must. Current duties also include filling online orders with quick turnaround times and assisting customers with our curbside pickup services while following safety protocols.

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service and address needs of customers in a timely and effective manner.
  • Ensure a fresh and appealing display by keeping shelves and displays clean and well stocked by front-facing, pricing, rotating, and removing out-of-date products.
  • Understand why our products are different from conventional stores and explain differences to customers.
  • Replenish beer through proper buying procedures.
  • Ensure orders for beer are timely and accurate to monitor inventory turns.
  • Ensure that product mix meets varied customer dietary needs and requests.
  • Sample department products to customers.
  • Support store leadership in conducting inventories. 
  • Maintain financial profitability by meeting and exceeding margin and sales targets.
  • Assist in training and developing Team Members on product knowledge.
  • Maintain accurate department signage and pricing.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable US regulatory rules and regulations, applicable alcohol handling and service regulations, Weights and Measures, health and sanitation, and adhere to safe work practices.
  • Manage our draft beer program by ordering, changing, and returning kegs and CO2 tanks, maintaining proper stock of branded growlers and crowlers.
  • Maintain crowler and growler fill stations and growler “swap” program for safe handling and consumption particularly given current health standards with COVID19.
  • Periodically perform seam checks on crowlers and mechanically adjust and calibrate Oktober Mk32 Can Seamer according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Ensure draft system is cleaned on a regular basis either in house or via contracted draft service technician.
  • Maintain a safe, clean and well-organized working and shopping environment.
  • Write and edit weekly newsletter sent to customers about new arrivals and happenings in the beer world.
  • Write and edit featured column (500-800 words) for ArlNow.com. Published every other week.
  • Post on social media when appropriate.
  • Answer department telephone calls and social media pages quickly and with excellent etiquette.
  • Assist all staff in packing and retrieving customer orders for curbside pickup program.
 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of beer production, ingredients, styles, history, and flavor profiles (including common off flavors encountered in retail environments)
  • Familiarity and/or willingness to learn about products, nutritional information, and other areas of study
  • Working knowledge and application of all beer merchandising expectations within the department with a specific focus on attention to detail
  • A desire to grow with the team
  • Ability to sell proactively
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of a position that requires a great deal of lifting, stacking of boxes with weights up to 50lbs in succession.
  • Ability to deliver information in a clear and respectable manner to fellow team members, customers, and vendors
  • Ability to educate team on product knowledge and convey enthusiasm
  • Strong demonstrated organizational and time management skills
  • Strong basic math skills
  • Knowledge and ability to use computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Knowledge and ability to use and successfully engage with customers via Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Untappd/Untappd for Business
  • Knowledge of MailChimp, Shopify, Vend or other email marketing, ecommerce, POS and inventory management systems a plus
  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability in recognizing and accomplishing all tasks where there is a direct job responsibility
  • Strong work ethic and integrity
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with a sense of urgency and an acute attention to detail
