Hilltop Hanover Farm & Environmental Center is a working farm and educational center located on 60 acres in Yorktown Heights, NY. Using organic practices, we grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers for a market-style CSA, on-site farm stand, and wholesale clients. The farm offers programs that teach and inspire our community about sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, and watershed protection. Our mission is to provide our community with healthy produce and to teach others to do the same. Our farm is open to the public free of charge.

Job description

The Harvest Manager is an integral part of our farm team, leading the field crew in harvesting vegetables, flowers, and herbs for our farm stand, online store, CSA members, and wholesale clients. The Harvest Manager is responsible for all aspects of produce distribution via multiple channels: retail, online, curbside pickup, and wholesale, including management of our on-site farm stand. Opportunities also exist for assisting with farm planning and crop scheduling and other aspects of farm management. The right candidate will be self-motivated, possess a good work ethic, and care deeply about post-harvest quality!  

Responsibilities

  • Monitor crop readiness, in close coordination with the Farm Manager
  • Estimate weekly availability for our online marketplace
  • Plan weekly pick lists and keeping accurate harvest logs
  • Proved feedback to Farm Manager about crop scheduling and adjust targets, as needed, based on marketplace demand
  • Ensure produce quality standards are understood and maintained by all crew members
  • Oversee produce displays, farm stand signage, and pricing
  • Manage crew efficiency in all aspects of harvest and pack shed activities
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
  • Order materials and supplies; maintain inventory and keep records of same 

Qualifications

  • 2-4 years of experience in organic vegetable production; harvest and wash/pack experience required
  • At least one season working in a supervisory role
  • Experience with GAP certification or other food safety training
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong commitment to organic and sustainable farming practices
  • Comfortably able to lift 50lbs
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to safely operate tractors and other farm equipment preferred, but not required
  • Wholesale and retail marketing experience preferred, but not required

Schedule & Compensation

The Harvest Manager is expected to work 40 to 48 hours a week in all weather conditions. Some weekend work is required. We offer an hourly compensation of $18-23, DOE. This position is scheduled to run mid-March through early December, with possibility of converting to a full-time position at the end of the season. Housing is not provided.
