Job description

Overview

Moose Meadow Farm is seeking two enthusiastic farm hands for the 2021 season. Employment will be April 2021 through mid-January 2022. These will be part-time positions in April (up to 35 hours per week), full time positions May through mid-October (most weeks will be 40-42 hours), and part-time positions mid-October through mid-January (most weeks this will be 14-16 hours). In the summer months we expect 8-hour workdays on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and 8-9-hour workdays on Tuesday and Friday. In the winter our workdays are generally Tuesday and Wednesday. We expect the workload to total around 1300 hours for the April through January season.

            We require one weekend of work per month, with Wednesday and Thursday of that week off. Though unexpected, we reserve the right to request more than 42 hours per week of work in the summer months, in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

We maintain a clean and tidy farm and have high standards of production quality. Our goal is to grow profitably on small acreage, feeding as many families as efficiently as possible, while enjoying the fulfilling farming lifestyle.

 Responsibilities

Farming is a job that requires myriad skills and tasks. Some or all of the following will be included in this position, but the vast majority of the position will be spent in vegetable and flower production:

  • Seedling production
  • Direct seeding
  • Transplanting
  • Bed preparation/turnover
  • Snow removal
  • Harvest/Wash/Pack
  • Ordering supplies
  • Hoeing/cultivation
  • Greenhouse management (pruning, trellising)
  • Construction
  • Driving deliveries
  • Customer interaction
  • CSA management and distribution
  • Record keeping

 Requirements

            This is a physical, outdoor job that requires one to be moving, standing, bending, kneeling, and lifting continuously throughout the day. Good physical condition is therefore mandatory. We are hiring for a labor job on a production farm. There is plenty of room for fun and learning, but many of the tasks are repetitive and are carried out in all weather conditions.

Additional requirements include:

  • Commitment to a full season in good faith.
  • Understanding that this is a family farm and the lines between owners’ personal and professional lives may be blurry at times.
  • Flexibility, as conditions and priorities change quickly.
  • Positive attitude in all working conditions: hot, cold, rainy, snowy, etc. and the ability to roll with the punches and remain upbeat.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds comfortably and safely.
  • Reliable transportation to the farm in Clark Fork.
  • Willingness to take direction and to learn, as well as to lead, take initiative, and innovate.
  • No smoking/drugs of any type on the property.
  • Adherence to food safety plan.
  • Legal ability to work in the US

Not required but preferred:

  • Knowledge of a variety of vegetables and flowers, both in growing and eating/cooking.
  • Outdoor work experiences and small farm work experiences strongly preferred.

 Compensation

            Crew member positions are paid hourly starting at $15/hr. In addition, we offer 5 days of paid vacation time to be used throughout the season. Vegetables will be included as compensation as they are available throughout the year.

After the first year, we will offer a $250 voucher to purchase work-related clothing or footwear, performance-based wage increases, increases in paid time off, and an increase in responsibilities based on worker’s interests and desires.
