Company description

For over 30 years, we’ve been at the forefront of a movement to preserve and celebrate traditional British cheesemaking. Our initial objective was to bring farmhouse cheeses, and the stories behind them, to as wide an audience as possible. It has been our privilege to help foster a renaissance, in an industry that spent much of the 20th century in abject decline.

The cheesemakers we choose to work with are small and independent; they are artisans who cherish quality over profit. Their way of working is as precarious as it is precious, a reality brought home all too recently by the Coronavirus lockdown. In today’s world of mass-production and convenience, it is vital that our cheesemakers’ individuality and craftsmanship be safeguarded. To not only protect our culinary heritage, but to ensure its availability for future generations to enjoy

We have had some success here, and today we are uniquely positioned to support the talented men and women behind Britain’s artisan cheeses. We ensure their goods have a way to reach the public (through mail order, wholesale, retail and export channels), and that the cheesemakers receive the reward and recognition they are due for the quality of their craft. To this end, we have also established awards at both the British and World Cheese Awards, and promote British cheeses on the packaging of our popular ranges of crackers.

Though we are The Fine Cheese Co., we have not limited ourselves to cheese (it pays to remember, Apple don’t sell apples and Orange didn’t sell oranges). A quote you will likely encounter in your time with us is, “Seek out the best, and, when you’ve found it, keep looking”.  This philosophy has not only helped us grow from small beginnings in our shop on Bath’s Walcot Street, to the point where our products can now be found in 60 countries around the world, it also neatly encapsulates how our range has expanded apace with our own growth.

With a global reach such as ours, we are in a position to seek out producers of other fine foods around the world who share the same ethos on quality as our cheesemakers. They are equally worthy of our appreciation and support. We started with European cheesemakers, but before long we started working with producers of charcuterie, olive oils, balsamic vinegars, truffle specialities and more. Ultimately, we are in the business of quality, and this is the common link in everything we promote.
