The Orcas Hotel & Cafe is now accepting applications for our 2021 InnKeeper-Chef Apprentice Program and Summer Internship Position. This unique program provides a hands on opportunity to learn what it takes to run all aspects of a small inn and restaurant while living and working on Orcas Island.
Our team comes from a variety of backgrounds and experiences; from Michelin level Mixologists and Chefs to Marketing Executives, Artists and recent business school graduates. Everyone shares a passion for food and hospitality. Each member of the team performs all of the tasks of running the hotel, from cooking and baking to taking reservations, painting, cleaning rooms, marketing, laying tile, gardening and washing dishes.
Everyone comes with different career objectives and uses their time here to refine those plans and build necessary skills. Some want to open their own bed and breakfast, others want to create boutique food businesses and others want to be chefs. Our commitment is to provide challenges and structure that helps each team member grow and reach their own personal goals and potential. This career plan is outlined in the form of a personalized grid customized for each team member after their first 90 days. Toward the end of the apprentice programs we assist team members with taking the next steps towards their goals including business plan development and strategy workshops.
We are looking for the best, not the most experienced. We value teamwork over speed. Enthusiasm over qualifications. Character over accomplishments. Grit and determination over aptitude. Simply put, we want to surround ourselves with people of high integrity and ambition who are committed to both improving themselves and contributing to a successful business.
This program is exceptionally demanding and will push you out of your comfort zone. The work is physically and mentally challenging, requiring that you constantly push your personal limits. One day you might be creating beautiful specials for the cafe, the next you will be stocking hundreds of pounds of ingredients and mopping floors. One morning you will be perfecting your latte pour and that afternoon you might be learning to clear drain lines and painting fences. We believe that no task is beyond your skillset, or beneath your abilities. The apprenticeship is far from glamorous, but reflective of the realities of running a small family business.
Idealists will be drawn to this opportunity, but pragmatists will find it the most rewarding.
We ask that each Apprentice applicant make an 18 month commitment to the project. Positions typically start in March or April each year. The summer internship is a 3 month commitment from Jun-Sep.
