Farm Crew Member Humble Umbel Farm

  • Date Posted January 18, 2021
  • Location Hurdle Mills, NC
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description

Humble Umbel Farm is a 1-acre minimal-till farm outside of Hillsborough, NC, started by Anna Alexandre and Brian Conner in 2018. We specialize in year-round production of lettuce, salad greens, root vegetables, herbs, microgreens, and cut flowers, as well as high tunnel tomatoes, cucumbers, and various other vegetable crops. We sell our vegetables and flowers primarily through our online store and at local farmers markets.

Our farming approach focuses on plant health and nutrient density, and utilizes various amendments, organic fertilizers, inoculants, foliar sprays, cover crops and mulches. We believe that healthy plants are immune to pests and diseases and we minimize even the use of organic approved pest/disease control substances.

We use “market garden” tools and techniques, including 30-inch beds, an assortment of specialized hand tools, and a BCS walk-behind tractor. We employ the use of unheated high tunnels, shade cloth, and sprinklers to grow crops out of season.

It is our mission to demonstrate that small-scale ecological farming can be productive, profitable, fun, meaningful, and play an essential role in local communities in terms of providing healthy food, educating the public, pioneering resilient farming systems, contributing to the local economy, all while building soil & giving back to the land.

Job description

We have two full-time positions available for the 2021 season. We are seeking hard working individuals who are quick learners, self-motivated, can get along well with others, have excellent time management skills, and can maintain a sense of humor throughout a long day’s work (no matter the weather)! A strong interest in learning about vegetable and flower production is also a must. It is important that our team is made up of folks who are positive, curious, communicative, reliable, and committed.

You'll be involved in most aspects of vegetable and flower production, including greenhouse seeding, bed prep, transplanting, weeding, irrigation, fertilizing crops, trellising, mulching, harvesting (lots of harvesting!), washing and packing produce, bouquet making, and selling at farmers markets.

You must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs, stand for extended periods of time, and crouch or bend over for extended periods of time. As a small-scale market garden, we do many things by hand and this job is very physical. **Previous farm work experience and/or manual labor experience is a must.**

We work 5 days a week. Your schedule would be Tuesday-Saturday or Monday-Friday (depending on whether or not you are working a Saturday farmers market as part of your job). The job requires commitment from February/March through the end of November, with potential to go year round. Folks only interested in part-time work may inquire as well. Strong preference for folks who already live locally.

We pay an hourly wage starting at $11-15, depending on experience, with potential for raises based on performance. You will also be welcome to take home as much produce (and flowers!) as you can eat. You'll have the opportunity to learn about successful small-scale regenerative farming practices first hand. This is a great opportunity for someone seeking in depth agricultural experience  and/or especially someone interested in starting their own farm.
