Our mission is to enrich the Clarkston community by offering growing spaces where refugee gardeners can grow their own food to feed their families and friends; facilitating educational opportunities for K-12 youth through agriculture programming, mentorship, employment, and STEAM curriculum initiatives; and providing gardeners in the programs access to healthy food and nutrition education. Reports to:  Director of Agriculture and Nutrition

Time Commitment: 20 hours per week

Wages: Hourly; $20 per hour

Summary: The Garden Site Manager will support the Director of Agriculture and Nutrition to implement the vision of the garden, assist volunteer teams, and provide direct supervision and management of the Growing Leaders (five to seven part-time Clarkston High School student employees) to maintain the grounds and support the needs of gardeners.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the grounds of the garden, including but not limited to general maintenance, lawn care, and tidying to make the property a welcoming and clean space (can be delegated to volunteers as needed).
  • Plan and facilitate gardener registration days and maintain a waiting list.
  • Provide helpful and efficient support to gardeners when needed, and manage gardener contact information, and communicate with gardeners via phone call or text when necessary.
  • Work with the Growing Leaders to create a property maintenance calendar so as to maintain a clean, tidy, and functional community garden at all times.
  • Create and maintain the weekly task assignment board, and check-in with the Growing Leaders on a regular basis to ensure everyone is on task. Tasks should be delegated to volunteers as needed. (Tasks include but are not limited to lawn care, weeding, watering, mulching, composting, greenhouse, and other general maintenance.)
  • Maintain regular communications with individual volunteers to update them on volunteer available time slots and tasks.
  • Use problem-solving and critical thinking skills in order to address garden/property issues and complete projects when necessary.
  • Support the Director in facilitating the weekly Growing Leaders meetings.
  • Facilitate volunteer teams – plan tasks for the team, extend hospitality and keep teams on task.
  • Keep a record of volunteer contact information and hours, as well as gifts-in-kind on a spreadsheet in Google Drive and submit to Director on a monthly basis or upon request.
  • Oversee the planting, maintenance, and harvesting of communal growing spaces.
  • Managing and tracking the purchase of materials for the garden including but not limited to tools, seeds, and seedlings for communal growing spaces, and signage.
 

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Prior experience working with new Americans or persons from other cultures.
  • Prior experience working in agriculture.
  • Prior experience working with tools.
  • Light construction skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Organized and detail-oriented.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit (takes initiative and thinks outside the box).
  • Prior experience using MS Word, Excel, Gmail, Google Drive, and other Google apps.
  • Some knowledge of another language, especially one spoken in Clarkston, a plus.
