We provide definitive recipes, hardcore food science, trailblazing techniques, and innovative guides to essential food and drink anywhere and everywhere. Job description

Serious Eats is looking to hire an empirically minded culinary expert to review assignment briefs for several types of content. This is a part-time role estimated at $30/hour for 20 hours/week.

The ideal candidate will have extensive kitchen experience and a working knowledge of both restaurant and home kitchen equipment. They will also have familiarity with recipe development, cross-testing, and photoshoot processes, with sufficient general culinary knowledge and research skills to inform styling choices and shot lists for dishes across a wide spectrum of cuisines.

About Your Contributions:

Editing Equipment Review Briefs
Serious Eats publishes in-depth equipment reviews that pit different versions of the same tool against each other, with the goal of identifying and recommending the best equipment to our readers. This process begins with an assignment brief that is sent to the reviewer and must be informed by someone with a meticulous, empirical mindset with a strong culinary background.

  • Look over and approve commerce editor’s assignments to equipment reviewers. Must ensure that culinary considerations are fully explored and clearly articulated.
  • Propose a rough outline for equipment reviewer to follow, using relevant existing content and recommendations on Serious Eats as a guideline. The level of research/due diligence expected is comparable reviews from competitors like Wirecutter, America's Test Kitchen, and Consumer Reports. (Ex: How do we define a “good” version of each category of equipment? What variables are important to consider? What does excellent versus poor performance look like?)
  • Approve/finalize equipment reviewer’s submitted testing plan and proposed candidates for testing. Make sure testing—both overall and each specific test—is structured to objectively assess performance, while controlling critical variables.

Editing Photo Briefs

Serious Eats is reshooting both beauty and step-by-step photographs to accompany recipes from our extensive library. This process begins with a review of the recipe instructions, ensuring that they are presented in the appropriate house style and broken down into logical steps. Then our visual director creates a photo brief for the photographer. Each photo brief must be reviewed to ensure the most critical moments are identified and captured, appropriate and culturally sensitive props and styling are used, and correct equipment to be used is specified.

  • Check each recipe for clear flaws (missing steps or ingredients, steps that need to be revised in accordance with our recipe style guide, instructions that seem blatantly incorrect) and flag when reconciling these issues should be addressed with a cross-test or edit from our team.
  • Look over the proposed photo brief to ensure each step is accompanied by an accurate representation of the culinary work involved and help find good reference images to supply the photographer with when appropriate
  • Review images when they come in for accuracy and proper demonstration of technique

About You:

We are open to a wide array of candidates, but believe a successful candidate should have:

  • Experience designing/running controlled tests and experiments
  • Knowledge and understanding of culinary equipment both in and out of professional kitchens
  • Strong sense of how visual aids can elucidate written recipe instructions
  • Familiarity with food styling and photoshoot variables
