Communications Lead Black Farmer Fund

  • Date Posted March 22, 2021
  • Location New York, NY
  • Category Media / Nonprofit
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description

Black Farmer Fund (BFF) was created by Black farmers who were frustrated with the limited financing options available to them, with the hopes of creating a funding vehicle that would challenge the racial injustices and wealth inequalities faced by Black Food actors. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and an emerging community investment fund that invests patient (flexible repayment terms), integrated capital (mix of low-interest loans and grants) in Black food systems entrepreneurs in New York State.

BFF is by us, for us, with a community of 12 Black farmers and food systems entrepreneurs from across the state leading the fund’s governance and making decisions around which applicants receive funding. Our process is consensus-seeking and guided by our values of economic justice, community wealth building, and managing environmental/ ecological impact. We are currently in our pilot phase. This spring and summer, we will make direct investments in Black food actors while emphasizing financial education, investment literacy, and active community involvement in creating these financing options.

Building relationships and intentional partnerships and operating in coordination with other values-aligned organizations, and provide complementary services and programs to Black Farmer Fund is key to our work. We are part of an Ecosystem of BIPOC-led organizations, collectively uplifting a racially just food system. Corbin Hill Food Project, Farm School NYC, Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust, and Soul Fire Farm Institute are part of this Ecosystem structure. Each of these organizations provides a specific service that supports Black farmer success. We are also part of Black Farmers United of NY State (BFU-NYS), a coalition of Black farmers and organizers advocating for state policymakers to direct more resources to Black farmers.

Communicating our work strategically through various platforms helps us connect to the many stakeholders connected to our work-Black farmers + food business entrepreneurs, food justice organizers, social impact investors, philanthropic institutions, and others. We keep our supporters engaged through our presence on Instagram and Linkedin, our quarterly newsletter, and our website.
