About the Queens County Farm Museum:

Queens County Farm Museum is one of the longest continually farmed sites in New York State, dating back to 1697. Today, the farm serves as a vital resource connecting people to agriculture and the environment creating learning opportunities and conversations about biodiversity, nutrition, health and wellness, climate change and preserving local history. Queens County Farm Museum is a New York City Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places. Queens Farm hosts a wide variety of acclaimed education programs, public events and adult education programs. 

Job Description:

The Queens Farm Agriculture Department is looking for a motivated, upbeat individual to join our team of farmers during our busiest time of the season. This full-time position will run from May–November 2021.  It is a versatile yet market/sales-heavy position, which calls for a friendly, patient, and positive attitude, as well as quick action and attention to detail and timeliness. 

Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):

• Setting up, restocking, leading, and breaking down our on-site and off-site farm stands
• Working alongside another market coordinator and seasonal farmers, under the supervision and direction of the Farm Manager and Director of Agriculture regarding market and field work
• Interacting with customers in a positive, kind, patient, and informative manner
• Inventory of farm stand supplies and communication for reordering
• Communication with seasonal farmers and others working in the field regarding farm stand produce needs
• Act as liaison for Director of Agriculture at off-site markets and communicate all necessary information
• Record keeping and data collection of farm stand sales, nutrition assistance programs and other pertinent data
• Field work

Required Skills and Experience:

• Driver’s license to be able to travel to off-site markets
• Exceptional communication skills
• Positive and patient attitude (even when swamped with customers)
• Excellent organizational skills
• Passion for local food and knowledge about produce
• Quick, basic math skills
• Attention to time and efficiency, especially during harvest and market prep
• Interest in small-scale agriculture practices
• Ability to work outside in all weather conditions in a fast paced work environment
• Endurance (harvest days and long market days can be exhausting)
• Farmers’ Market, retail, and/or service industry experience
• Willingness to work alongside farmers in the fields in all weather conditions

Our ideal candidate will be positive and patient, with stellar people skills and a passion for local food and sustainable food systems. Knowledge about a variety of organic produce would be a great asset to our team as well as an interest in small-scale intensive farming practices and working with a diverse public population.  It is important to value timeliness when working with a team as well as when you are expected to manage your own time at the off-site markets.
