Job description Job Summary: This position is the primary youth educator for the Community Food Education program at Solid Ground, leading classes, workshops, and events to strengthen communities’ ability to navigate their food environments. This position will provide hands-on (currently virtual) educational opportunities for youth to learn about growing, buying, cooking, and eating nutritious foods. The Youth Food Educator leads classes for youth in schools, before and after school settings including gardens, and at Marra Farm.

Essential Responsibilities, Duties & Tasks:

60% Teach and prepare educational materials for cooking/nutrition/gardening classes with youth, primarily Kindergarten through 6th grade, using existing curricula with Seattle Public School students, before and after school sites and at Marra Farm. Support adults and families education as needed. Classes are currently virtual due to COVID-19.

5% Steward school and childcare site garden spaces and assist with Marra Farm maintenance and production. Assist with virtual farm-based education.

10% Assist Community Food Education Staff with events, promotions and community level systems changes for community health

15% Perform administrative work to support classes – order class materials, groceries, class dishes, administer survey assessments, enter and track data, complete reports in a timely manner

5% Work with volunteers delivering class lesson materials in alignment with Solid Ground’s antiracism approach.

5% Participate in program, department, and agency meetings, Anti-Racism Initiative work, and relevant trainings as required. Support departmental and program goals as needed.

Education & Experience:
Requires one of the following:
a) One-year experience teaching and coordinating with youth, preferably with diverse groups of youth living on low incomes; OR b) Bachelor’s degree in education, nutrition, social service, community service or related field; OR
c) Any combination of experience and education and measurable performance which demonstrates the capability to perform the duties of the position

Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish
  • Knowledge of nutrition, cooking, food security, and gardening
  • Experience and passion for leading and teaching youth, preferably youth living on low incomes
  • Detail-oriented and organized with the ability to manage time independently and meet deadlines
  • Proven ability to prioritize and handle multiple time-sensitive tasks
  • Proven ability to adapt, problem-solve, and think creatively • Demonstrates excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Experience working with people from a variety of racial, cultural and economic backgrounds, with various lifestyles, sexual orientations, and of all ages
  • Proven ability to work individually in a self-directed manner and as part of a team in group projects
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends, approximately 1 weekend a month
  • Experience using MS Office software including Word, Excel, Publishers, Outlook, and social media
  • Valid Driver’s license and willingness/ability to drive own vehicle with mileage reimbursement or program vehicle with volunteer passengers to class sites throughout Seattle area

Physical Demands/Working Conditions: This position works in the community 70% of the time and 30% of the time in the office. This position spends 75% of office time managing physical program materials, 20% of office time on the computer, and 5% on the phone and in meetings. Work outside the office is 70% in classes, 20% dropping off or picking up supplies, and 10% driving. This position requires the employee to occasionally lift 25 pounds, and move 5-10 pounds regularly. The employee has the ability to sit and stand as needed. During COVID, this position will require some hours each week in-person at Marra Farm and Solid Ground’s Wallingford location in order to prepare class materials. The remaining hours will be worked remotely. 

Hours & Compensation: This is a regular 40/week, union position paying $20.20 per hour plus benefits. Benefits include medical, dental, short-term and long-term disability insurance, basic life insurance, 401(k) savings plan including agency contribution and match, holiday pay, generous paid personal leave package and tax-sheltered health care and dependent care accounts.
