Position Summary:

The Kitchen Educator is involved in teaching kitchen and garden classes and is responsible for the maintenance, care and upkeep of the kitchen classroom. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

(Include but are not limited to)

  • Maintains the order and cleanliness of kitchen as stated in the kitchen handbook and utilizing kitchen maintenance schedules
  • Involved in kitchen classes guiding students through lesson and recipe execution and clean up
  • Involved in garden classes, guiding students through propagation, harvesting, cultivation, composting, greenhouse production and maintenance of the garden
  • Remains familiar with both the curriculum and the current harvest in the garden, to ensure preparedness to teach the classes
  • Remains informed about daily class schedule and lessons
  • Collaborates with the ESY Education Manager on the execution of grade appropriate kitchen skills, activities and lessons
  • Plans and executes Family Cooking/Garden Classes
  • Attends garden walk-throughs and distributes garden walk-through notes
  • Maintains kitchen inventory

 

All Kitchen Staff Will:

  • Participate in the implementation, set up and teaching of daily lessons
  • Help maintain kitchen facilities and equipment
  • Help with daily and weekly kitchen work
  • Participate in garden work
  • Teaches or participates as needed in the garden or other ESYKC sites
  • Attend and participate in all staff meetings, garden walk-throughs and scheduled ESYKC professional development days.
  • Grocery shops in an efficient, sot-effective manner
  • Coordinates maintenance of kitchen facility and equipment including, dishwasher, refrigerators/freezers, ovens, stoves, washer/dryer, cooking tools, and knives.

Community:

 

  • Help plan and/or execute Community Cooking & Garden Classes, Annual Plant Sale, camps, and fundraising events.
  • Attend school-wide functions (i.e.: Open House, Showcase Night etc.)
  • Maintain healthy relationship with BV Elementary, GFEF  and ESYKC Staff 
  • Represent ESYKC program to wider community (i.e.: giving tours of ESY, public speaking engagements, off site community events)
  • Will be required to participate in Mobile Kitchen Classroom (MKC) offsite events

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work with elementary school children in an educational environment
  • Ability to maintain order and safe working practices in a kitchen setting with young students
  • Knowledge of effective and efficient kitchen techniques
  • Attention to detail a must to maintain aesthetic of environment
  • Ability to take direction and work on a variety of tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to interact positively and effectively with a variety of constituents including students, co-workers, parents, teachers, volunteers and visitors
  • Ability to work collaboratively

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree preferred
  • Experience in a culinary or kitchen setting 
  • Experience working with young students preferred
  • Educational experience in related fields preferred

 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work with frequent interruption
  • Ability to stand, stoop, reach and bend
  • Ability to grasp and manipulate small and large objects
  • Ability to read small print
  • Ability to taste, smell and feel to determine quality of food
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to work with and near electrical and other equipment

Ability to work outside in summer heat
