FIELD & LARDER PART-TIME FARMWORKER JOB DESCRIPTION

Field & Larder, a small-scale vegetable and berry farm in Chester, NY with an interest in supporting food access in the Hudson Valley, is looking for help for the 2021 season.  We are growing rapidly and have recently built two high tunnels in order to extend our season starting in 2021.

We are looking for help with fieldwork during the 2021 season including planting, harvesting, and weeding approximately 2 days per week (exact schedule negotiable) OR someone who can commit to working every Tueesday or Friday from June – August and possibly longer.   We can provide work hours until late December for someone who finishes the season with us.

We grow day neutral strawberries and part of this position would involve helping out with the weekly management of this crop from June – September.  This would include weeding, harvesting, cutting runners, and irrigation.

Field & Larder is located at the Chester Agricultural Center (CAC), an organization dedicated to making farmland affordable to new farmers.  All farms in the CAC use only organic production methods and work together to make farming a viable profession.  We also work cooperatively with Spanish-speaking farmers at the CAC, and we welcome applicants who speak Spanish as their first language, or who have significant Spanish language conversation skills.

We are a for-profit farm, but we have a strong interest in supporting organizations that support hunger relief, food access, and other forms of fresh produce donations in the Hudson Valley.  Anyone who works with us will have the opportunity to learn about and take part in these efforts and our weekly donations.

This position is a great opportunity for someone interested in learning about starting their own farm, the dynamics of renting land and infrastructure in the Hudson Valley, and growing and selling specialty produce.

What we are looking for in a candidate:

-One full season of farming experience strongly preferred (but other experience in the food industry will be considered)

-A strong work ethic that includes punctuality, a capacity to do physical work, an ability to work quickly for longer periods of time, and a desire to improve

-Interest in being part of a small, growing farm and talking to the public about our farm and the Chester Ag Center at farmers’ markets and CSA distribution

-Commitment to a consistent part-time work schedule from May- November

-A Positive attitude and good communication skills

What we are offering for compensation:

-$14-16/hour depending on experience

-Potential opportunity for additional paid work hours from May- September

-Weekly produce

-Free Strawberries in the fall

Compensation this position is : hourly, varies DOE, $13.00 - $17.00 Application instructions
