Farm Worker Wise Acres Farm

  • Date Posted June 22, 2021
  • Location Kenduskeag, ME
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Part-Time
Company description

Wise Acres Farm grows 2+ acres of certified organic vegetables and berries for local farmers’ markets and a CSA program. We have been farming on this land since 2012, after apprenticing and working on other area farms for three years. We are a women-owned, inclusive farm.

We count on our employees to help us care for our land, operate a financially sustainable business and provide our community with fresh, local, yummy produce.

Job description

Farm workers help us in the daily work of the farm from now through October. We are currently hiring one part-time team member to work three to four 8.5-hour days per week (25.5-34 hours total). Additional hours may be available during busy parts of the season. If you are an experienced vegetable farm worker, we will consider your application if you are available to work a minimum of two days per week.

Primary tasks include planting, cultivating, harvesting, washing and packing a wide variety of produce, maintaining accurate digital records, and cleaning and maintaining our harvest containers, tools and production spaces. Farm workers may also make CSA deliveries, staff our farmers' market stands, or help with farm infrastructure projects. They work closely with the principal farmer and a small group of other employees with ample opportunity for discussing the hows and whys of daily tasks.

We encourage applicants with previous farming experience to let us know about any specialized farming skills you bring and any aspects of farming with which you would like to gain additional experience this season. We enthusiastically welcome successful employees to return for multiple seasons and can offer pay raises and, as appropriate, increased management responsibilities to those who return.

We take COVID-19 safety seriously and expect all our employees to do so as well. Applicants who are offered a position will be required to disclose their vaccination status and agree to the COVID-19 safety policy in our employee handbook prior to accepting the position.

Expectations
  • Experience with and appreciation for strenuous outdoor work (farming, landscaping, building trades, trail/conservation work, etc.)

  • A positive attitude and a sense of humor and purpose

  • Attention to detail, efficiency and ongoing improvement while performing repetitive tasks

  • Willingness to take both direction and initiative

  • Proactive, honest and constructive communication about work-related information and personal needs

  • Ability to work hard outside in all weather conditions (and in air that may contain common allergens) and dress in appropriate work clothing

  • Ability to lift and walk a short distance with 50 lbs

  • Availability to work at least 12 weeks (full season strongly preferred)

  • Reliability and punctuality

  • A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are required for insurance purposes, and reliable transportation is needed as we are located in a rural location with very minimal public transportation.

  • Legal status to work in the United States

Schedule

Our crew works Tuesday-Friday 7 AM-4:30 PM. Part-time schedules will be arranged within these hours to meet our mutual needs. All team members take an unpaid hour-long lunch break on full days. If the timing of work projects allow, employees may choose to take a shorter lunch break (must be at least 30 minutes) with supervisor approval.

From July through frost (usually mid-to-late September), the position requires some 4-to-8 hour harvest shifts on Saturdays (starting time and rotating Saturdays off to be coordinated with fellow employees). Some employees may also work Saturday shifts at other times in the season.

Compensation

The base wage for this position is $13.15/hour and increases based on experience, within the farm’s budget. Employees earn paid time off at the rate of one hour per 40 hours worked. We do not offer housing or meals, but all employees earn credit for our retail-quality organic produce and can also bring home an abundance of surplus produce.
