Hearty Roots is a great place to work. Located in the Hudson River Valley of New York, we grow 30 acres of certified organic vegetables per year on our 70-acre home farm and 50 acres of leased fields, and care for laying hens, pigs and, starting in 2021, sheep. 
You will be part of a tight-knit crew, working cooperatively and having a great time as we move quickly in the fields with views of the Catskills. We are proud to be a CSA farm, providing 700 shares per week to families in our region and NYC, along with a large weekly delivery to a group of food pantries in NYC, and food for our Farm Market.

We (the farm owners, Ben Shute + Lindsey Lusher Shute) are also co-founders of the National Young Farmers Coalition and Farm Generations Cooperative, and we are very dedicated to training new farmers to be successful. Nothing makes us more proud than seeing how our current workers have added to their responsibilities and skills while working here,  and how many of our former farm workers have gone on to start and manage impressive farms of their own.

Job description We're looking for people who love to farm and work with a cohesive team!  As a Crew Member, you will be involved in almost all aspects of the farm: seeding, planting, cultivating, irrigation, pest and disease control, mowing, greenhouse work, animal care, and harvesting. Most days are full of many varied tasks. Members of our crew can expect to gain a strong understanding of all aspects of running a sustainable vegetable farm.

The ideal candidate:

• has at least one season of experience working on a farm;
• is self-motivated to work quickly and efficiently, either alone or in a group, whether the task at hand is time sensitive or monotonous;
• is positive, enthusiastic, and has the ability to see the big picture while paying close attention to detail;
• is able to work all day on their feet lifting heavy things whether it’s raining, sweltering or beautiful out;
• is able to lift 50 lbs.

Hours:

• 5 days/week plus rotating weekend chores.
• Typical schedule is 7am - 5pm with a one hour lunch break.
• Crew positions begin in April, May or June and run through October or November.

Compensation:

• $14 / hour.
• Free organic produce from the farm and a 30% employee discount in our farm store.
• There may be a room available in our spacious and newly renovated on-farm apartment.
