The Role:

The head food scientist will be responsible for product development from formulation through commercialization. This person has expertise in food science, ingredient functionality, and nutrition principles, and will both apply and abide by regulatory guidelines. As the leader of the food science development team, you will work cross-functionally to launch Be the GOAT’s core product, followed by leading the development of future innovations. Our goals are and always will be to bring simple, healthy products to babies and comfort to parents.

Responsibilities:

  • Spearhead product development from formulation through commercialization
  • Purposeful sourcing of sustainable, organic ingredients
  • Apply ingredient functionality knowledge to innovate and optimize final product
  • Explore alternative manufacturing methods with intention of maximizing nutritional value of individual ingredients
  • Evaluate the nutritional composition, texture, flavor, and color of product
  • Perform rigorous and intensive product safety testing
  • Determine and optimize product shelf life
  • Balance high quality ingredients and best-in-class manufacturing practices with consumer price sensitivity
  • Ensure manufacturing processes exceed government regulations, consumer safety, and industry standards
  • Effectively collaborate with microbiologists, engineers, packaging specialists, regulatory, and consumers
  • Longer term: 
    • Research and collaborate with ingredient suppliers to identify novel ingredients
    • Iterate and optimize manufacturing processes, including establishing strategic partnerships in the manufacturing space
    • Maintain safe, efficient, and collaborative day-to-day operations
    • Set industry-leading standards for safety and quality
    • Build and lead robust in-house team and continue to innovate in the infant nutrition space

Must Haves:

  • Passionate about infant nutrition and healthy living
  • Self starter who possesses a disruptive mindset while maintaining respect for industry regulations
  • Strong time management and organization skills – you complete projects on time and have the foresight to effectively communicate blockers/challenges
  • Meticulous attention to detail, with particular dedication to nutritional safety and regulatory standards 
  • Proven success working independently and in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work cross-functionally
  • Eagerness to take on challenges - you see opportunities not barriers
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Professional and articulate written and oral communication skills
  • Interest in building a passionate team and ability to cultivate a collaborative culture

Education/Training:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. degree in food science, nutrition, and/or food engineering
  • 8+ years working for mature food-related start-up or established CPG
  • Proven track record of working in dairy (bonus if goat-related), powdered beverage and/or infant nutrition space from formulation to commercialization
  • Experience working with Quality and Regulatory teams, a plus if experience includes working with the FDA
  • Project management expertise
