Company description

About Philo Ridge Farm:

Philo Ridge Farm is a certified organic 400-acre farm located in Charlotte, Vermont, a rich agricultural community in the Champlain Valley, just south of Burlington. The surrounding area is home to many flourishing enterprises, including orchards, dairies, vegetable and livestock operations, and sugarbushes.

Philo Ridge Farm is a diversified farm in its fifth year of production. Our livestock program grazes over 200 acres of perennial pasture and includes 80 Belted Galloway cattle, 30 breeding ewes, 65 lambs, 250 laying hens, and 3,500 pastured chickens. In addition, we grow two acres of organic produce and perennial fruits alongside two year-round greenhouses. Our farming practices build soil health, produce a variety of nutrient-dense foods, reduce the use of fossil fuels, and support the local agricultural community. We produce our own organic compost and hay on-site. The farm is also home to our restaurant, market and commercial food processing facilities, and is a year-round gathering place in the community.

Alongside the owners and leaders of Philo Ridge Farm, our partner, Bio-Logical Capital, helps manage the business. Together we aim to create a new diversified model for small scale farmers, one that will allow both the land and the farmer to prosper. In addition to supporting operations and strategy, Bio-Logical Capital works with the University of Vermont to help monitor and evaluate our impacts on soil health, crop and pasture productivity, water quality, carbon sequestration, and wildlife populations. Our goal is to continue to share our story and data with others who are interested in understanding and supporting regenerative agriculture. About our Hospitality Program:

In the summer of 2018, we opened the Farm Commons Barn: a 6,000-square-foot kitchen, restaurant and market developed to sell products grown and processed at Philo Ridge Farm. The market serves meals in a casual counter-service style, and offers a curated grocery selection showcasing our meats, fresh produce and other products from local farms and producers. The restaurant is a full-service, fine dining operation that is open year-round, with a winter dining room that seats 50 people and an expanded outdoor dining area that seats 150 people in the summer season. The commercial kitchen and processing facility operate a production cycle year-round, handling the value-added food processing and butchering of our farm-raised animals. We have a year-round staff of 30, growing to 50 in the summer season. The Farm and the Farm Commons Barn allow us to welcome the public and host events throughout the entire year.
