Company description The Culinary Gardener is a highly productive 2 acre farm business located 10 miles north of Asheville, NC in the Reems Creek Valley. We use sustainable practices to grow an extensive variety of vegetables, herbs and edible flowers year round, and market to local restaurants and a 30 member CSA. We focus on soil health and meticulous harvest and processing techniques to produce crops of the highest quality. This full time position begins ASAP and will go until the end of 2022 with the opportunity to stay on for future seasons. Compensation includes a salary, (based on experience) 10 days paid vacation, and vegetables. Housing is not provided. The work week is generally Monday-Friday 8am-5pm with a 30 minute lunch break, but this will vary slightly throughout the season. Expect to work more hours in the spring and summer and fewer hours in the winter. Each employee works one Saturday per month between April and October. Weekend work will include harvesting, mowing, farm clean up, and other small projects. We work in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, strong wind, high temperature and humidity, bitter cold, and everything in between. We have 4 greenhouses and 8 hoophouses. We work in them and maintain them in all seasons. Applicants that work hard and excel throughout the season will get a year-end bonus.

In 2022 we are looking for a Field Manager to work closely with the Farm Manager to manage all aspects of running an intensive farm. The Field Manager will be responsible for leading crew members and managing all aspects of production including greenhouse management, direct seeding, transplanting, harvesting, cultivating, washing/packing, fertility management, pest and disease management, and irrigation. Ideal candidates will have experience with physically demanding labor, a passion for growing food, and a positive attitude. The Field Manager is expected to think and work like a professional. Experience in construction and working on machines will add value to your application.

Requirements

  • Applicant must have completed a minimum of 5 seasons of farming small to medium scale vegetable operations

  • Applicant must have a minimum of 2 seasons managing farm workers, interns, etc

  • Intention to make multi-year commitment with potential for increased compensation and responsibility

  • Must have a high attention to detail and high level of organization, and be able to take direction well.

  • Must be able to maintain a positive attitude and consistent work flow in all weather conditions.

  • Ability to lift 50lbs regularly and perform a variety of tasks efficiently and consistently.

  • Must have good communication and listening skills and be able to thrive in an intimate working environment.

  • Ability to manage with respect and empathy.

  • Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot

  • Ability to motivate crew members and provide detailed instructions and examples

  • Excellent time management and strong sense of pace and urgency associated with task completion

  • Ability and willingness to learn from constructive feedback

  • Strong work ethic

  • Must be willing to work past 5pm when necessary

  • Must have experience operating a tractor and various tractor implements

 

Regular responsibilities include: communicating with the Farm Manager about the day’s task list and priorities, attending weekly managment meetings about the week’s priorities, field work plan, tractor work plan, and harvest plan, Also, plant propagation, planting, harvest, cultivation, washing/packing, bed preparation, foliar feeding, tractor work with a 70hp Kubota tractor and various implements, maintaining infrastructure, organized work spaces, tools and supplies.
