farm worker Clay Hill Produce and Flowers

  • Date Posted February 01, 2022
  • Location Tiffin, OH
  • Category Agriculture / Education
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description Clay Hill Produce and Flowers is a small certified organic farm in rural northwest Ohio run by Kristy and Aaron Buskirk. We are looking for a full-time farm worker with experience. Our land (52 acres) was family farmland, converted from conventional grain to organic produce 8 years ago. 12 acres are rotated for field crops while the rest is cover crops, native grassland and woods. There are two main fields with the woods in between, one field is sandy and well drained, and the other is heavier clay soil. We grow a wide variety of vegetables and flowers and sell at 3 farmers markets in the Toledo area, to a CSA and a little wholesale. There is a heated greenhouse, 3 high tunnels for season extension, and a walk-in cooler. The farm is located outside the small town of Tiffin, and is about 45 minutes from Toledo, 1.5 hours from Columbus, Cleveland, Detroit. Internship description The farm worker position begins in April, but the start time is flexible. Tasks for this position will include all aspects of the farm from greenhouse propagation to planting, weeding, irrigation, harvesting, washing, and selling at market. Almost half of our business is cut flowers, so on some days there will be a flower crew and a veggie crew. Based on experience and interest one can be trained on either or both crews. The work is physically demanding, fast paced, can be repetitive and is almost all outdoors, no matter how hot or if raining. After a training period a worker will be expected to receive instructions and compete tasks alone or with a small crew. We use a tractor for ground prep, cultivating and a water wheel transplanter, but there is still plenty of hand planting and cross hoeing. The work week is 45 hours, sometimes a little less in the spring, but overtime is possible in mid-season. Any worker who fits well here and stays a second season could expect a raise, a manager position and potentially year-round work. For anyone interested there is an old 27' camper on the property that has electric, a small fridge, a stove, cold water, no heat. Anyone living in the camper must be comfortable using a composting outhouse and setting and maintaining mousetraps. Alternately there are affordable apartments available nearby. We can provide you with all the food we grow, plus eggs from our chickens and can trade/buy most anything else at the farmers markets. Educational opportunities include access to our seed sources and saving practices, our library of farming, permaculture and plant identification books, and visits to other nearby organic farms. We will also answer questions and discuss our theories and goals for soil and plant management.
Compensation this position is : hourly, $15-20/hr
