Job description

Job Title: Bee - Perennial Coordinator

Location: Stone Barns Center in Pocantico Hills, NY

Supervisor(s): Reporting to the Director of Ecology and Arts & Ecology Director

Employment Classification: Full-time/Salaried, Non-Exempt

Frequency of Pay: Bi-weekly

Salary: non-exempt role starting with an annual salary of $42,000

Schedule: 5 days, may include weekends and some evenings

 

THE ROLE 

The Bee-Perennial Coordinator’s duties include maintaining beekeeping operations and budget, as well as assisting in perennial plant production, Arts & Ecology floral operations and programming. Collaboration with the Ecology and Facilities teams is essential to ensure maintenance of infrastructure (apiary structures, fences, mowing.) The Bee-Perennial Coordinator will work within an integrated team of farmers, land stewards  to support a resilient agro-ecological system at Stone Barns. A desire to become an informed advocate for the farm’s ecosystem(s) as a healthy environment for wild bees and other pollinators is valued. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Bee Coordinator Responsibilities (50%)

Apiary Management & Health 

  • Primary responsibility is care for the health and resilience of our two apiaries
  • Carry out all appropriate interventions and hive management activities
  • Harvest honey and bee products in line with hive health
  • Maintain all relevant tools, spaces and equipment

Honey Harvest and Bee Products 

  • Organize and oversee all aspects of honey harvest, extraction and processing
  • Coordinate with Arts and Ecology Lab for sales and marketing channels
  • Harvest and process other relevant bee products (i.e. wax, propolis, etc.)
  • Develop and maintain extraction  SOPs ensuring sanitary process

Teaching and Education

  • Participate in regular educational programming
  • Give talks, tours and presentations as needed

Recordkeeping and Data

  • Maintain critical apiary management data
  • Coordinate with Ecology and GIS manager to integrate records with ArcGIS database
  • Collaborate with the Director of Agroecology and R&D as well as the Communications team to share these discoveries, ongoing work, all things that are beautiful and relevant to the annual cycle.

Perennial Coordinator Responsibilities (50%)

  • Floral harvest and foraging
  • Floral design and event assistance in the Arts & Ecology Lab
  • Assist in perennial plant operations and projects
  • Honey, wax and other honey bee product development 
  • Support with affiliated educational programs and tours 
 

PREFERRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE

  • Adept in beekeeping problem solving, preference for multiple years on the same farm
  • Comfortable with the reality of beekeeping hazards (stings, ability to lift 50 lbs. safely)
  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record
  • Results driven, goal-oriented and autonomous
  • Resourceful with a demonstrated ability to anticipate change and proactively adjust priorities and strategies accordingly
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Public speaking experience
  • Ability to give and receive feedback
  • Desire to learn and grow, both personally and professionally 
  • Interest in working multiple seasons with us
 

Compensation and Benefits

Stone Barns Center is committed to equity and inclusion throughout every aspect of our work and team. Our investment in education and development includes a salary commensurate with experience starting at $42,000 / year; 401k with employer match; health, dental, vision, and life insurance; and generous paid time off. This position is non-exempt from overtime pay.
