Chocolate Shop Manager Heavenly Chocolate

  • Date Posted May 11, 2022
  • Location Northampton, MA
  • Category Business / Production
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description Heavenly Chocolate was founded in 2007 as part of an independent grocer with a commitment to local and organic ingredients. Now owned by former employees, we handmake confections and carry other chocolatiers products that celebrate life, like foraged mushroom ganaches to highlight the New England forests, banana pudding truffles that remind us of our siblings, or pumpkin peanut butter cups because why *not*? Job description

Hi! We’re Heavenly Chocolate! We're looking for the right person to join us at our chocolate shop inside Thornes Marketplace. This person will work with and report to the owner/GM, helping keep our retail store fresh and vibrant while helping build our sales via online and wholesale channels. You'll be wearing many hats and doing a little bit of a lot...but our shop is tiny and there's a lot of downtime/flexibility. We strongly encourage you to apply even if you don't tick every box.

Some details:

  • Counter Sales - You’ll be working our kiosk inside Thornes Marketplace to help customers prepare gift boxes of truffles and caramels. General register/retail experience is great, but experience with specialized sales (wine, coffee, cheese, etc.) would be ideal.
  • Customer Service - You’ll be working with customers one-on-one to help pick out gifts, so people skills will go a long way. You have a knack for making bad days better and can handle tough interactions with grace. You'll be expected to make judgment calls on things like refunds, exchanges, and other small issues that require a quick decision.
  • Working Solo - Our space is small and most shifts will be working alone for extended periods of time. You’ll be expected to work independently for long periods (6+ hrs) with little direction, keeping the kiosk tidy and completing assigned tasks. Because of the location and size, our shop has a lot of downtime, so you'll be expected to come up with and pursue other projects as well. Solo opening/closing experience is a must (some places would call this keyholding).
  • Retail Operations - You'll be expected to help make sure our shop is humming along efficiently. That means keeping an eye on our supplies and inventory, making sure that we have everything we need and it's all in the right spot. We don't need you to be an ordering superstar (though it helps!), but you should have a decent understanding of maintaining supplies. Some light merchandising experience would be a huge plus, as you'll be expected to keep our displays fresh and fun.
  • Online Operations - We have increased our online efforts over the last two years. It'd be great if you have a basic familiarity with packing/shipping online orders. If you're familiar with Shopify's backend and juggling UPS, FedEx, and USPS, that's a huge plus.
  • Wholesale Sales - Our wholesale business is in its baby stages, and you're willing to help us grow it! When there's downtime, you'll be asked to find and manage wholesale accounts. We expect this to be a very small percentage of your time as we get the ball rolling, with the goal to split responsibilities with the owner/GM as things get busier! You'll receive a commission of sales in addition to your base pay for every account you bring on.
  • Kitchen Work (a plus if you have it, no worries if you don’t) - One or two days a week will be spent in our chocolate kitchen. These are production-focused shifts that help break up the week and keep things from being too repetitive while allowing you to learn about our products from start-to-finish.  Food service experience will go a long way (pastry/confection would go even further), but is not a requirement.
  • You're Confident... - You have a solid head on your shoulders and enough self-confidence to make decisions, pitch ideas, and back them up. If you feel like your idea is the right one, you're willing to bring it up more than once. You're willing to try something just to see if it works.
  • ...But Not TOO Confident - You should know what your flaws are and have enough grace to accept others for their flaws. You're a team player and know when to let others shine. "What grows together goes together" right?
  • COVID-19 Safety - There are currently no local or state mask mandates at time of writing. We do not require masking except when there are shared kitchen shifts where two people are in the same room for an extended period of time. Because you are working with the public in close proximity to your coworkers in a production environment, vaccination against COVID-19 is required (defined at time of writing as two doses of Pfzier/Moderna or one of J&J by the CDC).
  • You’re, Y’know…a Living Breathing Person - You have hobbies and passions and dreams and values. We think it's important to have things outside of work to look forward to!

This position is full time at approximately 33-35hrs/wk (approx 5 days with scheduled lunch breaks and 15 min breaks). Benefits include 40hrs PTO (in addition to accrued sick time), paid holidays, tips, 30% store discount and 20% discount at the neighboring organic grocery store. We are open 10-6 most days, 10-8 Friday/Saturday, and 12-5 Sunday. We do ask for at least one weekend day available (Friday thru Sunday)...but we are Not Robots and will happily make adjustments for the right candidate.

Compensation this position is : hourly, $15-20/hr Application instructions
