The Education and Engagement Program Director is a multi-faceted position that requires strategic program and partnership development and adaptation; oversight responsibilities for program implementation; direct management responsibilities for individuals and projects; and direct responsibilities for identifying, developing and implementing new and existing grants, contracts, research projects, and other potential revenue-generating initiatives for Fresh Approach’s Education and Engagement projects.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Education and Engagement Program Director position directly manages and oversees the management of all staff on the Education and Engagement team. The Program Director is responsible for directly managing and guiding the Program Managers, and is responsible for directly managing Program Specialists and Program Coordinators when Program Managers are not in place. As of April 2022, the Program Director directly supervises 3 Program Managers, who in turn supervise 1-2 Program Specialists or Program Coordinators each (10 people total on the Education and Engagement team including the Program Director).
The Program Director develops and oversees Fresh Approach’s Education and Engagement programs to improve health outcomes and access to affordable local produce in Bay Area communities. These programs include the VeggieRx Cooking & Nutrition program, Collective Roots Community Garden program, and Community Engagement program. The Program Director is responsible for the delivery and overall success of each Education and Engagement program and pilot project, including directly supervising the program team and informing management on progress and performance. A successful Program Director has a broad knowledge of program management principles and must have a strategic mindset as well as be able to help develop program staff. The goal is to ensure every program will be delivered successfully and add the highest possible value to the organization and for the communities served.
The Program Director reports directly to the Executive Director and works closely with the Development Director to identify and pursue grant and other funding opportunities to support Fresh Approach’s programs. The Program Director is responsible for identifying, developing, and implementing new and existing grants, contracts, and research projects, in addition to other potential revenue-generating initiatives for the VeggieRx, Collective Roots Community Garden, and Community Outreach programs, and other pilot projects. The Program Director does this while also developing and maintaining a high-quality pipeline of projects aligned with the education and engagement program strategies, as well as maintaining knowledge of current public health and food systems trends and conditions.
The Program Director is expected to identify new solutions, partnerships, and services to maximize growth opportunities and enhance existing relationships. Additionally, the Program Director must be able to connect the day-to-day delivery of programs to the broader organizational and programmatic vision, and will be trusted to gather information from the field to evolve Fresh Approach’s programs and strategy.
