The National Young Farmers Coalition (Young Farmers) shifts power and changes policy to equitably resource a new generation of working farmers. We envision a just future where farming is free of racial violence, accessible to communities, oriented towards environmental well-being, and concerned with health over profit. Since our founding in 2010, we have grown our grassroots network to over 200,000 farmers and supporters and have won historic investments in beginning farmer training, outreach to farmers of color, farmland conservation, and accessible COVID relief.

Job description

The National Young Farmers Coalition seeks an experienced organizer and legislative campaigner to join us in the newly-created role of Land Organizing Director. The Land Organizing Director will lead grassroots strategy for our One Million Acres Campaign, harnessing the power of our farmer leaders to deliver historic wins for equitable land transition in the next farm bill. The Land Organizing Director is a remote position and will be a central part of our national land campaign team, reporting to the Land Campaign Director, and managing the Land Campaign Organizer. 

 

Responsibilities

Project & Program Strategy

  • Collaborate closely with the land team, as well as the Field Director, to ensure that our field organizers, Land Campaign Fellows, and farmers throughout our network are fluent in, and are engaged with, our land campaign goals, strategies, and actions.
  • Develop strategy for Campaign advocacy actions, such as in-districts, days of action, and letter writing campaigns.
  • Direct the strategy and implementation of a 100-person Land Campaign Fellowship, including curriculum design and delivery and fellow experience in collaboration with the Land Campaign Organizer. 
  • Work with our communications team to train farmers as spokespeople and support op-ed writing and earned media.  
  • Collaborate with federal policy and organizing teams to direct the largest-ever young farmer fly-in to D.C. in March 2023.
 

Staff Management

  • Manage the Land Campaign Organizer.
  • Serve as a member of the Young Farmers Management Team, practicing and serving as a model for our values and guiding principles in alignment with our strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with the policy and field teams to ensure alignment and shared understanding of the Land Campaign across the organization.
 

Development

  • Collaborate with the Land Campaign Director and the Development Team to meet development needs for the Land Campaign Team.
  • Participate in funder calls and contribute to proposals and reporting to share strategy and updates on the Land Campaign. 
 

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with the Land Campaign Director in engaging with coalition partners, in alignment with our strategic plan and with the Land Campaign goals. 
  • Grow the coalition of partner organizations signed on to our campaign, recruiting hundreds of local and regional organizations to join us. 
 

Budget Management

  • Manage budget for the grassroots side of our land campaign, including the 100-person farmer fellowship and D.C. Fly-in, including compensation to farmer fellows, paying speakers, and other related costs.  
 

Qualifications & Competencies

  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience;
  • Experience navigating between policy, advocacy, and grassroots organizing spaces;
  • Deep organizing and advocacy experience including: 
    • Recruiting organizational sign-ons for a coalition advocacy effort.
    • Leveraging organizing tools and strategies, including digital organizing platforms and grassroots leadership development.
    • Preparing participants for advocacy actions, such as in-districts and fly-ins.
    • Developing a grassroots organizing strategy based on political analysis. 
  • Long-running, demonstrated commitment to racial equity and deep understanding of the history of racial violence in land policy. 
  • A record of service to making structural change and challenging accepted practices and norms;
  • Relational leadership and communication skills—a good listener who is empathetic and balances inclusivity and empowerment with pragmatism and purpose;
  • Highly organized with strong time management skills and ability to prioritize based on organizational mission and goals;
 

Additionally, the ideal candidate will:

  • Hold lived experience as a farmer.
  • Have experience organizing direct actions, such as rallies.  
  • Speak an additional language to English.
 

Compensation and Schedule

  • The salary for the Land Organizing Director is $72,500 based on our 2022 Compensation Guidelines.      
  • Young Farmers offers a competitive benefits package, including health and dental insurance, retirement matching, generous paid time off, and paid family leave.
  • Full-time schedule, typically 9am-5pm Monday through Friday. Flex time, or 1-to-1 paid time off, is available to staff when work requires more than 40 hours in any given week.
