Job description

Position Summary

 

GrowNYC is seeking an enthusiastic individual with strong experience in garden-based education to join the Teaching Garden team within GrowNYC’s Green Space Program. Reporting to the Program Manager, the Education Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the Teaching Garden’s school and public programming and the curricula and materials that support these. Applicants should have experience in urban agriculture and sustainability, environmental education, and be comfortable working outdoors in all conditions and with people of all ages and abilities. The successful candidate will be a capable self-starter, willing and excited to grow existing initiatives, develop new ideas, and expand the Teaching Garden’s offerings.

 

Education Coordinator Responsibilities:

 

· Recruit and schedule schools, summer camps, and senior tours for weekday structured and self-guided programing.

· Act as the primary contact for teachers and counselors bringing groups to the Teaching Garden.

· Lead regular hands-on garden-based lessons for visiting K-12 NYC public school students, campers, and senior citizens.

· Direct and train Garden Educators for weekly programing and curriculum implementation

· Coordinate daily site prep each morning and site clean-up/breakdown each afternoon

· Document field trip outcomes and impacts through teacher and student evaluations, surveys, and tracking

· Develop and implement creative grade-level lesson plans, activities, and recipes for school field trips.

· With the guidance of the Farm Coordinator, participate in all aspects of intensive organic vegetable production: planning, planting, harvesting, record keeping, pest/weed control, irrigation, and compost management.

· Assist with public outreach through weekly social media updates

· Partner with other GrowNYC educational initiatives on programming and outreach

Requirements

Ideal Qualifications

· Knowledge of sustainable agriculture and urban sustainability

· Experience teaching youth and/or adults in a farm or garden setting

· Familiarity with the NYC school system

· Strong skills in program administration, communication and time management

· Experience supervising staff and/or volunteers and working with diverse communities

· Willingness to be in outdoor settings in hot/cold/rainy weather

· Familiarity with current software technologies and social media; preferred knowledge in Excel,and/or data management system

· Ability to work weekends on an occasional basis

· Basic gardening and carpentry skills a plus

· Valid Driver’s License for at least 1 year with a satisfactory driving record,

 

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, and carry bulky and heavy items

 

Schedule

This position is full-time (35 hours+) from March to November 15th and part-time from November to March. Some weekend work may be required.

 

Compensation

This position pays $26/hour and includes benefits.
