The Alaska Pacific University Kellogg Campus is a culturally responsive, living lab for place-based education in the North, engaging in community, environment, energy, and food systems.

Spring Creek Farm, located on APU's Kellogg Campus, supports food security in Alaska by operating a vegetable farm using sustainable methods, training new farmers, and creating a space for integrated academic and co-curricular programs that are both ecologically and economically sustainable.  The farm grows 2 acres of vegetables to provide for a 100+ member CSA program, a farmers market, the dining hall, Alaska TILTH, and other sales venues.

Job description

The natural setting of APU’s Kellogg Campus, in the spirit of Louise Kellogg’s vision, is to be used to offer exceptional and integrated academic and co-curricular programs that are ecologically, socially and financially sustainable. The Kellogg Campus Manager is responsible for furthering this mission in three primary areas: 1) Increasing environmental and sustainability education opportunities in South Central Alaska by working in collaboration with APU faculty and programs and community partners 2) Growing the campus’s role as an educational center for culturally responsive sustainable and innovative practices; 3) Supporting and ensuring the long term financial viability of the Kellogg Campus and Kellogg Campus based programs through grant initiative development and associated financial management.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Campus Program Communications, Development, & Support (40%)

  • Provides administrative support for MSOEE, FIELD School, and Spring Creek Farm.
  • Serves as liaison between APU-Anchorage Campus and Kellogg Farm Campus.
  • Coordinates with APU leadership to develop and align project goals and strategies and meet any legal obligations on the Kellogg Campus including the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program.
  • Engages and updates key constituencies at APU in the operations of the Kellogg Campus as necessary.
  • Fosters, promotes, and strengthens interactions among various APU departments engaged with the Kellogg Campus, including but not limited to the Facility Maintenance and Dining Services.
  • Develops strategic community partners to create a strong network for Kellogg Campus based programs support and additional innovative programs that promote access to healthy community infrastructure including housing, energy, clean water and food that are regionally and culturally appropriate.
  • Develops and manages the APU Farmer's Market.
  • Assures dissemination of information about events and programs through websites, blogs and social media, in partnership with APU Marketing & Communications.
  • Develops infrastructure projects and funding options in coordination with APU leadership, and as determined by budget, to increase program capacity.
  • Promotes and markets approved rental objectives and maintains relationships with renters.
  • Maintains knowledge of leading community health, sustainability and environmental education programs in higher education Advances APU and ANTHC’s missions by supporting the growth of communication and community outreach responsibilities including: self-supporting options like tours, workshop series and training programs geared towards ongoing Kellogg Campus programs and projects.
  • Attends annual meetings of the Kellogg Trust to provide updates.
  • Publishes Annual Report and quarterly updates of Kellogg Campus progress for stakeholders.
  • Attends Coordinating Council

Farm Facilities Maintenance (25%)

  • In partnership with APU facilities, oversees maintenance of the Kellogg campus in working order: snow removal, lawn mowing, tree trimming of roof line, clear and proper signage, trash and recycling removal, restocking supplies, routine cleaning oversight, and weekly inspection of APU facility, vehicles and equipment. Communicates facility and grounds needs with APU Facilities contractor or internal services.
  • Communicates and coordinates with APU’s facility management for major repairs and service needs.
  • Maintains positive communication and emergency (on call) issues with the APU Kellogg Campus user groups.
  • Coordinates all scheduling and facility use by APU (departments, clubs, and classes) and community workdays as desired and appropriate.
  • Weekly check-ins with APU Facilities

Employee Management (10%)

  • Hiring supervisor for Spring Creek Farm program
  • Manages Kellogg Campus-based student employees; including hire/ fire, supervision, and performance development of grant-funded employees, summer interns, Work-Study students, AmeriCorps VISTA members, and any in-kind student or community volunteer throughout the year.

Accounting & Budgeting (25%)

  • Maintains detailed accounting of expenditures and revenues for the Kellogg Campus, including regular evaluation of applicable budgets, accounts and available funds.
  • Budget supervisor for Spring Creek Farm
  • Invoices customers in a timely fashion and ensure that all revenues are collected.
  • Works with Auxiliary Services for rental and insurance tracking
  • Develops fiscal year budget with the APU Leadership and then the Finance Department for the Kellogg Campus based on anticipated operational expenses and expected capital improvements and expansion.
  • Works closely with the President’s Office and the Office of Advancement and Sponsored Programs in the application, reporting, and overall process for grants, all reimbursement incentives, Agricultural Conservation Easement Program, and other funding opportunities.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Bachelor’s degree in sustainability studies, environmental science/studies, environmental education, community health, or related field. Progressively responsible professional work-related experience, education, or training may be substituted for academic credentials upon review.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Event planning and facility management experience
  • Experience with Indigenous food systems
  • Program development experience.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Supervisory and Non-Supervisory: Two (2) years of management of an educational facility.
