Food Program Director Del Norte/Tribal Lands Food Council

  • Date Posted June 28, 2022
  • Location Crescent City, CA
  • Category Nonprofit
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description

The Del Norte and Tribal Lands Food Council works collaboratively to co-create a local food system that provides access to healthy, culturally appropriate food to all families in Del Norte and Tribal Lands. Our programs are organized around four primary efforts: ensuring food security, growing our local food economy, creating a prepared and resilient regional emergency food system, and shifting DNATL’s resident food culture towards healthy foods. The DNATL Food Council is housed within the Family Resource Center of the Redwoods (FRCR) non-profit, and works closely with a myriad of community, regional, and state partners.

In 2010, DNATL was identified as one of the 14 communities in The California Endowment’s (TCE)Building Healthy Communities (BHC) initiative, a ten-year, place-based initiative to improve health outcomes for all residents, with a strong emphasis on equity. The DNATL Food Council was founded with a BHC grant in 2010 to bring together food system stakeholders, including residents and consumers, to improve healthy food access and opportunity for all. With the end of BHC in 2020/2021, DNATL CFC has successfully transitioned to a place of sustainability beyond TCE funding into the next decade. Recent DNATL Food Council work includes:

  • Gained rare designation as 2nd county food bank from CA Department of Social Services.
  • Launched DN Harvest Box, a multi-producer CSA-style regional food hub.
  • Created supports and a market chain, and secured grants to enable local small-scale commercial fishermen to sell their catch into the local emergency food and regular consumer economy.
  • Designed the first county-wide food rescue operation. Designated by the joint powers authority (county/city/solid waste management) as the food recovery organization for the region.
  • Launched the Pacific North Fresh Mobile Market Pantry, bringing nutritious food to the food insecure in the most remote areas of Del Norte.
  • Secured $774,000 food bank capacity grant to help increase much needed infrastructure for the efficient running of all of our operations.
  • In third summer of carrying-out Food and Farm Camps for kids pre-k to 8th grade at the 60,000 sq ft Taa-‘at-dvn Chee-ne’ Tetlh-tvm’ food forest that we manage.
  • Formed the Del Norte Food Security Taskforce, a coalition of over 30 stakeholders from municipal government, faith-based organizations, public health, Tribes, school district, and other nonprofits.
  • On the cusp of launching a reorganized Community Food Council with members representative of the diverse communities in our county, who fill staggered 2-3 year terms, are compensated for their time, and serve as the primary designing, advising, and guiding body for matters that affect the strength and resiliency of our county-wide and regional food system.

This position will work out of Del Norte County, the beautiful northern corner of coastal California. This region is home to Redwood National and State Parks, the Wild and Scenic Smith River, and miles of Pacific Ocean beaches. There are abundant opportunities for hiking, camping, surfing, and kayaking. Del Norte is also only a short drive from Arcata, home of Humboldt State University and Ashland, home of Southern Oregon University, the Shakespeare Festival, and the Britt Festival.
