Company description Built in 1804 as the original storehouse in Millwood, VA, The Buttery housed the supplies - including “butts,” or barrels, of liquor - for the laborers running the Burwell-Morgan Mill around the clock.
Located in the historic cabin storehouse with a new adjoining terrace, The Buttery is an eatery offering global and local wines, craft beer, cider, and seasonal cocktails along with farm-to-table fare from the kitchen at Locke Store, our attached "modern country" store and specialty grocery built in 1836.

We work hard to create the best experience for our customers and to provide a fun and supportive environment in which our employees can learn and grow. We debut a new menu each month, host a monthly Sunday Supper, and are open for private events.
Job description

The Sous Chef at The Buttery supports the Head Chef in building a cohesive kitchen team, assisting with the daily operations of the kitchen, and maintaining our upbeat, team-oriented atmosphere. Our ideal candidate is someone with a positive and professional attitude who is passionate about making and presenting quality food and has a desire to expand their knowledge. This position requires an average 40 hour work week, including weekends and evenings.

 

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Execution of creative, seasonally-driven menus and prepared foods
  • Oversight and participation in daily food prep and production
  • Maintaining a clean and orderly kitchen and adhering to health and safety standards
  • Assessing inventory and supplies and rotating product appropriately
  • Occasional assistance with off-site catering and private dining events
  • Assisting with kitchen setup and breakdown
  • Participating in training and meetings
 

Key Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of relevant kitchen experience strongly preferred
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Ability to self-manage & multi-task
  • Strong organization and communication skills 
  • Team-oriented approach
  • Willingness to learn, adapt, and discover new methods and techniques

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking around the kitchen
  • Moderate exposure to light heat and cold through the course of cooking
  • Regular use of sharp kitchen tools, such as knives, peelers, and mandolines
  • Regular bending, crouching, reaching, pushing, and pulling
  • Repetitive hand movements such as chopping, stirring, and whisking

  • Starting salary range $35,000 - $42,000 (based on experience)
