Job description

Overview

Under the supervision of the Cultivator for a Sustainable Future (Cultivator), the Community Gatherer (Gatherer) oversees day-to-day agricultural operations at Table Farm—an urban microfarm that is a community engagement ministry of the The Table at Central United Methodist Church—including everyday farm maintenance through the agricultural cycle, leadership of Community Volunteer Shifts and coordination of a neighborhood compost collection program. Working with the Cultivator, the Gatherer also plans and leads intergenerational programs and gatherings at Table Farm including but not limited to a summer internship program and small group spiritual formation opportunities for high-school youth, story time for families with children, special projects for middle school youth and various creative expressions of worship. 


STATUS: PART-TIME/HOURLY 

  • Generally 24 hours per week, including Saturday mornings. 
  • Weekly work hours and schedule vary–determined in collaboration with supervisor—shifts as necessary to fulfill responsibilities and mission/program goals of The Table UMC.


PAY  This position is paid bi-weekly on an hourly basis, $25/hour.


ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP AND SUPERVISION  The Community Gatherer reports to and is supervised by the Cultivator for a Sustainable Future.


RESPONSIBILITIES
Table Farm Agricultural Operations:  

  • Works with the Cultivator to update and implement an annual farm plan, including but not limited to ordering supplies, planting bed and drip irrigation maintenance, planting, cultivating, and harvesting/distributing.
  • Supervises three community volunteer farm labor shifts per week and staffs the Saturday Farm Stand.
  • Responsible for farm produce and flower subscriptions from harvest to pick-up;
  • Responsible for produce deliveries to the South Sacramento Interfaith Partnership Food Closet;
  • Oversees the neighborhood compost collection program.
Table Farm Intergenerational Ministry:
  • Leads a paid summer high school youth internship program (Farm & Bread Fellowship) which seeks to develop sustainable farming skills, leadership skills, spiritual reflection, and climate resilience among youth attending high school in Sacramento County.
  • Assists with and implements under supervision by the Cultivator, a variety of intergenerational gatherings at Table Farm, including but not limited to story time for families, various projects for middle school and high school youth, and creative gatherings for worship;
  • Works with the Cultivator to ensure that Table Farm operations stay coordinated with Table Bread operations.


OTHER TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT  

  • Authorize The Table UMC to perform a background check (required of all staff and volunteers who interact with children and youth). 
  • Possess a valid California Driver’s License


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS  This position requires physical stamina, including but not limited to bending, stooping, lifting, and digging in order to fully attend to the operational needs of Table Farm.


SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES 

  • An excellent collaborative work style is essential—including strong interpersonal skills to cultivate healthy, motivating relationships with and among others.  A successful candidate will demonstrate experience in team-building through implementation of broadly inclusive group processes.
  • Experience in leading small, task- or reflection-oriented groups of youth and children is essential.  
  • A flexible schedule is essential.
  • Training in theology or education is desired.
  • Experience with sustainable agricultural operations is desired.
