Our mission: Growing a movement for food justice and community wellness through garden-based education. We offer garden-based education through a variety of programs that serve students in elementary through high school, including youth in after-school, residential foster care, and summer apprenticeships. SproutEd, our flagship program and the program this position supports, brings garden-based learning to Kindergarten through 2nd grade students in 10 Hudson Valley schools.

Job description

Approximate Schedule: July 12 (or asap) - September 2, 2022,
13 - 15 hours / week, flexible weekly schedule

Compensation: $15/ hour, plus negotiable travel reimbursement 

Position Description: The Gardener will be responsible for watering, weeding, planting, harvesting, and other gardening tasks in 3 elementary school gardens in Beacon, NY. This person must have reliable transportation to get to school gardens, as they will be gardening in multiple locations each day. This position will work with the LtL Garden Management Team who will help the Gardener develop a schedule of garden maintenance tasks to be completed each week independently. The schedule is created by the Gardener, who will decide which days and hours each week they will complete tasks. By helping us maintain school gardens throughout the summer recess, this position will contribute to our mission of educating children in outdoor garden classrooms. The Gardener can expect to gain knowledge and build skills in gardening, food literacy, ecology, and botany while reporting to the Garden Management Team. 

Expectations & Requirements: 

  • Some gardening experience required
  • Must have reliable transportation for travel between schools
  • Time management skills to build and adhere to a schedule of tasks, efficiently executed each week
  • Must be able to work independently
  • Must be physically capable of manual labor outside during summer months, and be able to lift up to 25 pounds
