All-Around Farm Hand Minka Farm +1 more

  • Date Posted July 01, 2022
  • Location Efland, NC
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description Minka Farm is a small family farm in the Triangle area of North Carolina.  We use sustainable, earth friendly methods to raise high-welfare, pastured meats and eggs.  We use sustainable, no-chemical methods to grow vegetables and orchard fruit.

The Minka Farm livestock list is long and varied: beef cows, meat goats & sheep, hogs, chickens (meat & eggs), ducks (eggs) and Great Pyrenees for livestock protection.  All are raised outdoors, on pasture or in the woods.  Our beef is 100% grassfed and grass-finished, certified by A Greener World.  Our layers (duck & chicken), beef cattle and pigs are Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World.

The orchard hosts PYO blueberries, pawpaws, Asian persimmons, apples, pears, figs, jujubes and muscadine grapes.  We are planning on adding other PYO berries.

Minka Farm sells most of our products directly to the public through an on-Farm Store, CSA and pre-ordered pickup from the farm.  We sell whole hogs and sides of beef which are delivered. We deliver to a few local restaurants and supply our local Whole Foods stores and Weaver Street Markets with duck eggs. Job description Farming is hard work but working at Minka Farm makes it all worth it.  A beautiful setting with life abounding: domesticated and wild, plant and animal, makes working here enjoyable and fulfilling. There is a seasonal rhythm to the work but there are also consistencies throughout the year. We value independence in our team. Once trained, you will be fit into our schedule and be responsible for tending to the animal lives on our farm responsibly and reliably, interacting with our customers respectfully and helpfully, running the CSA from planning through execution including delegating tasks to others.  We expect you to offer suggestions when you see opportunities to increase productivity and efficiency.

We all take turns doing animal chores - feeding, watering, health checks. With a veterinarian on staff, you'll learn all about caring for each species day-to-day as well as helping with animal restraint during medical procedures when they are needed.  If you want to learn more, you only need to ask.

You'll be in charge of the garden: up to 1 acre of amazing soil teeming with life: NC red clay amended with composted manure annually for over 10 years is fertile and workable.  We grow chemical-free vegetables and field fruit for a small CSA and direct sales.  You'll work with the farmer to plan, but will take charge of soil mixing, seed starting, transplanting, weeding, pest control, harvesting, post-harvest handling, bundling and sales.

Additionally, you'll help with washing eggs daily (duck and chicken), candling and packing them; make once weekly local deliveries to restaurants and stores; run the Farm Store on Saturdays (10a-2p); help fill orders for pick ups; help clean animal housing; assist with pruning in the orchard and harvesting orchard fruit that is not suitable for PYO; whatever else is needed since farming has a never-exhausted list of to-do's.  If interested, you can also assist with marketing via newsletter creation and social media posts.

Qualification musts:
Good work ethic
Desire to learn
Can work outdoors in all weather
Can lift at least 50 lbs
Small-scale vegetable production experience

Interest in working with many animal species using high-welfare methods
A sense of humor is helpful getting through the challenges of farming

Qualification desires:
Previous farming experience

Social media marketing experience

Landscaping tool experience: mower, weed whackers

Living on the farm is a requirement for the position.  The house is available September 2022.  Recently renovated 3-bedroom house rents under a work-for-rent agreement.  You are responsible for utilities.  High speed 5G cellular internet is most effective option in our rural area.  Can be split with other employees or rented as a whole for a family.  The house sits next to our agritourism rental cabin so loud parties are discouraged, the yard must be maintained and there is a reasonable limit on the number of cars that can be parked at the house.

Before you relocate to NC, we would like you to visit Minka Farm and work with us for at least 2 weeks to ensure a good fit.  We will provide housing for your visit. Compensation this position is : hourly, $15-20/hr Application instructions
