Heart of the City Farmers Market is a uniquely independent, farmer-operated, nonprofit farmers market located year round on Sundays and Wednesdays in San Francisco's United Nations Plaza. An iconic and beloved community resource, the market opened in 1981 with a mission to support and sustain small farmers and make fresh food accessible for low-income customers who struggle to afford adequate nutrition in a city with the highest cost of living in the nation.

We are the largest farmers’ market food assistance program in the nation. Our food access programs distribute over $2 million a year from our information tent, provide nutrition education and support, manage distribution and redemption for the largest farmers market EBT program in the nation, and make over $1 million per year in grant-funded incentives available to help low-income families purchase fruits and vegetables from local farms. 

Job description

San Francisco’s iconic Heart of the City Farmers’ Market, an independent, non-profit, farmer-operated farmers’ market at the UN Plaza since 1981, seeks a reliable candidate for temporary and flexible information tent support team shifts to support the nation's largest farmers' market food access program.

Responsibilities:

  • Farmers’ market information tent customer service and line management in a fast-paced, high-volume retail environment
  • Processing high-volume credit card and CalFresh EBT card payments to assist farmers’ market customers to purchase market tokens and vouchers to spend with vendors
  • Assisting with critical food relief distribution to address rising food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting the nation’s largest farmers’ market food access program to distribute over $2 million in food assistance each year to San Francisco’s most vulnerable residents in the form of tokens and vouchers to buy additional produce from small farmers
  • Providing orientations for new customers and answering customer questions about the market
  • Alerting security guards and managers to security issues via radio to diffuse confrontations without anger or violence in a high-crime neighborhood
  • Must be able to remain neutral and calm in challenging interactions with customers
  • Farmers market is open rain or shine including most holidays
  • Requires working outside under a canopy tent in all weather conditions
  • Consistent and reliable attendance is required
  • Bilingual Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Russian, Arabic, or Spanish preferred

Available shift hours:

  • Wednesdays: 7am to 3:30pm (8 hours)
  • Sundays: 7am to 3:30pm (8 hours)

Pay: $20/hr
