MISSION
Miriam’s Kitchen works to end chronic homelessness in Washington, DC. We advocate for permanent supportive housing as a long-term solution, while meeting short-term needs by providing healthy scratch meals made with fresh ingredients and high-quality social services to individuals who are experiencing chronic homelessness.

ABOUT THE POSITION
We are looking for a talented chef/cook who is:
- Mission/service and team-oriented
- Creative in developing menus and executing scratch-made meals for 150-200 people
- Able to lead meal shifts/service
- Willing to share knowledge with team members and train volunteers
- Collaborate with team members on menus and special events
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leadership: manage and execute at least 1-3 shifts per week; support lead for other shifts.
- Teamwork: assist team in planning, preparing and executing at least 4-5 shifts each week.
- Execution: maintain inventory, cleanliness/organization, and FIFO standards for all food storage
- Engagement: ensure satisfaction and positive experience with donors, vendors, and volunteers to foster good relationships
- Assist: help team members with other tasks needed to support vision and events as needed
Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must be able to stand 8-12 hours a day
- Must be able to lift 40-50 lbs regularly
- Effective communication skills, particularly in translating kitchen roles and tasks to untrained volunteers
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating and communicating well with team members
- Strong time management skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Spatial planning (maximizing limited storage)
- Flexibility
- Good organizational skills
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities
- Problem-solving skills
- A valid driver’s license and 2-3 year driving history – Minimum age 25, necessary for insurance coverage (desired)
- Computer skills; knowledge of Microsoft office, mobile phone apps
Experience
- At least 3-5 years working in a restaurant/professional kitchen
- ServSafe Certification required
- Microsoft Office knowledge (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Relevant work/volunteer experience in a service-focused capacity with a mission-driven organization
Kitchen Culture
We work hard, support either other, and have fun. We make restaurant-quality food from fresh ingredients and can be creative with menus (like episodes of Chopped but more time to plan and execute).
