We aim to make a positive impact on what children and families eat by giving youth hands-on experiences with growing, harvesting, cooking, and eating nutritious, fresh, local foods in season. WHO YOU ARE:

  • An experienced gardener focused on food production, ideally in an urban and/or school setting
  • A clear communicator with strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Ideally you have familiarity with elementary science education topics and food, garden and environmental education programming
 

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

The FoodPrints Garden Manager is responsible for supporting the management and maintenance of FoodPrints partner school gardens. This individual will report to a FoodPrints Instructional Coach and work closely with the entire FoodPrints Instructional Coaching team and teaching staff. They are also responsible for garden-based project management and facilitating internal professional development.

  • Support maintenance tasks for seasonal planting schedules and develop maintenance plans for gardens of multiple sizes with varied planting capacities.
  • Plan new garden installations and garden rebuilds and be available to lead the projects as necessary.
  • Assist with garden tasks and maintenance as needed, including supporting the distribution of materials to school gardens across the city.
  • Coach FoodPrints Teachers through regular written communication, and be available to answer questions on all aspects of garden care & maintenance.
  • In partnership with our team of Instructional Coaches, plan and lead professional development for teachers on garden maintenance and other garden-related topics and create resources and tools, as needed.

THE DETAILS:

  • This is a part-time, non-exempt position paid at $25-$28 per hour, depending on experience
  • This position is expected to average of 20 hours per week, based on candidate availability and program need.
    • Due to the seasonality of garden and school-based work, hours can fluctuate to include between 20-25 hours in the Fall & Spring and 15-20 hours in the Winter & Summer
    • The hours for this role will occur during Monday-Friday during standard business and school hours
  • This role will require work at various locations, including FoodPrints partner schools in Washington, DC, the FRESHFARM Office, and some remote work
  • All part-time employees receive 40 hours annual sick leave**. This role is also eligible for paid parental and bereavement leave, 11 annual holidays (4 hours each) and 40 hours of vacation leave pursuant to the FRESHFARM handbook, with an increase after 3 years of service.
    • **For 2022, sick leave is expanded to as-needed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic
  • The employee in this role will be eligible to contribute to an employee-funded 403b plan (opt-in; Roth or post-tax)
 

PHYSICAL & OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position and move about garden or classroom spaces for 6-8 hours per day, multiple days per week
  • DCPS clearance (free of charge; FRESHFARM will provide support to navigate this process as needed)
  • Ability to lift, transport, or move objects up to 35 lbs and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and has/will receive booster when eligible
  • Must have a personal smartphone ($25/month stipend provided for use)
  • Must have access to a car for transporting materials and supplies, and to commute to multiple locations daily; standard mileage reimbursement is available for supplies transportation
  • While this role will require the use of a personal laptop or Chromebook device, a $500 tri-annual stipend can be used to purchase or maintain such a device, if needed
