Job description

We are looking for fellow food lovers to fill BOH roles and join our team as an essential part of bringing flavorful, local ingredients to New Yorkers. Our new Market & Cafe in Carroll Gardens is a small operation with opportunities to grow within the company. It’s the perfect place to expand your cooking skills in a healthy work environment with a creative and collaborative team! The Role

    • Prep Cook: Handle food in a safe and compliant manner. Follow recipes and prepare/cook food to the highest standards. Prepare ready-to-eat and pre-made foods to sell in the café. Monitor quality control of each food item throughout preparation and service. 
    • Execute seasonal recipes correctly and consistently.
    • Must have strong knife skills and be familiar with efficient mise en place organization in the kitchen.
    • Maintaining an efficient dish pit and clean kitchen, up to par with food safety standards.  
    • Opportunity for recipe development and creation using seasonal, local ingredients from our amazing farms.
    • Team collaboration on events, new menu items, and building the market & cafe community. 
    • Event Preparation and Service: Support logistics for Local Roots events and catering services. Lead the team in food preparation, service, and presentation. 
    • Covid-19 Compliance: All Team Members will be responsible for keeping the Market and Café safe and clean, and will be empowered to enforce Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and reduced indoor capacity requirements as mandated by New York City.

Qualifications - Required

  • Able to routinely lift and carry 50lb boxes 
  • Able to work on your feet while on-shift
  • Proven experience working quickly in the kitchen 
  • Commercial kitchen, restaurant or culinary experience required
  • Experience with food preparation, knife skills, following recipes
  • New York Food Handlers card or ServSafe food handlers certification required
  • Able to work on your feet while on-shift
  • Extensive customer service or community engagement experience

Hours, Availability, and Compensation

  • Prep Cook (Brooklyn location): Part Time- 3 8 hour shifts a week, either Saturday-Monday or Sunday-Tuesday- flexible times. 
  • This position is paid hourly, earns up to 40 hours annually accrued PTO (after 120 day of employment) and receives cash and square tips. 
  • Other perks:
    • $300 Bonus for working with us for 3 months.
    • Weekly farm produce share *approx 3-5 vegetable or fruit items*

    • 20% off any additional subscriptions, add-on items and retail items in cafe

    • Comped tickets to sustainability/wellness/regenerative agriculture events

    • Team visits to partner farmers and purveyors, when available
