We create living classrooms to provide real-life learning experiences and generate proceeds that are 100% reinvested back into the local community. In 2016, Farms Work Wonders launched the Wardensville Garden Market project—an organic farm, market, and bakery that has currently created over 100 local, good-paying jobs with most held by local high school students, and we continue to grow.

Job description

The Assistant Farm Manager will work in partnership with the Farm Manager and Farm Crew to produce Certified Organic vegetables for our outlets.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  •  Lead the Farm Crew in daily production tasks, including bed preparation, seeding, transplanting, cultivating, harvesting, washing, and packing
  • Help provide education and instruction to local high school students (Junior Crew team members) who participate in many of our enterprises 
  • Support sales outlets including bakery, kitchen, onsite produce and plant sales, wholesale, and CSA
  • Ensure farm and production spaces are clean, presentable and attractive at all times
  • Contribute to social media and other marketing efforts
  • Support interdepartmental collaborations and team development

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate machinery including a 39hp Kubota tractor with a box tiller, plow, brush hog; a BCS 853 and a BCS 749 with flail mower, power harrow, rotary plow
  • Maintain agricultural tools and equipment including irrigation infrastructure
  • Maintain production records including seeding, harvesting, and sales

KEY QUALIFICATIONS 

  • At least one full season of diversified vegetable farming experience
  • Passionate about working for a youth-driven nonprofit organization
  • Must have a friendly and positive demeanor
  • Must be able to work with a sense of urgency
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, and reliable transportation (Our farm is rurally located with limited public transportation available.)
  • Must have weekend availability
  • Ability to work alone or with a team on various projects
  • Must have leadership experience or related educational qualifications

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be hardworking and understanding that farming is rewarding, yet physically demanding
  • Must have enjoyment of working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

WORK SCHEDULE AND POSITION DATES

The Assistant Farm Manager is expected to work 8 hours per day, 5 days per week, with 2 consecutive days off per week. Must have weekend availability. The position term is expected to be filled February 1, 2023 through December 31, 2023 (start date negotiable 1/1/23 - 3/1/23).  Year round opportunities may exist for the right candidate.  

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This position is classified as exempt with an annual salary starting at $37,440. In addition to competitive pay, we offer the following benefits for regular, full-time employees:
