Company description The San Luis Valley Local Foods Coalition is a nonprofit dedicated to fostering an equitable local food system that restores the health of the people, community, economy, & ecosystem. We work towards this mission through four major programs including the Rio Grande Farm Park, Local Foods Local Places, SLV Cooking Matters, and the Valley Roots Food Hub. The Rio Grande Farm Park is a 15 acre farm dedicated to preservation and creation: the preservation of the San Luis Valley’s agricultural heritage, precious water resources, and open public spaces; and the creation of economic development, healthy living practices, and educational opportunities. The Local Foods Local Places program focuses on analyzing the local food system and providing resources to assist in areas of need. Additionally, Local Food Local Places runs a food truck called MoKi that serves a unique local dish each week. SLV Cooking Matters offers free weekly classes related to cooking healthy meals on a budget. Classes are in both English and Spanish, and can be virtual or in-person. The Valley Roots Food Hub is a local food aggregation business with the mission of building, operating, and sustaining a local food system that increases the demand for and accessibility of fresh, healthy food. The Rio Grande Farm Park (RGFP) is hiring a Farm Park Education Coordinator to oversee the continued development of the RGFP’s regenerative agriculture education programming for community youth and farmers. This position will focus on designing the overall education goals of the RGFP while also implementing the educational programming throughout the year. 

A main emphasis is placed on the long term strategic planning of the RGFP’s flagship summer program, Rising Stewards, which is specifically curated for local high schoolers. 

Duties will also include the logistical planning of workshops and educational events for RGFP and community farmers.

 

JOB DUTIES

  • Envision the long term educational curriculum possibilities given the farm and organization’s resources.
  • Design the overall strategic education plan with community stakeholders
  • Begin implementation by working closely with Farm Park staff and community partners
  • Lead Rising Stewards, RGFP’s flagship summer program for high school youth
    • Strategize long term opportunities to uplift and empower historically unserved high school youth via farming education
    • Continue development of program/curriculum including community partners
    • Recruit program participants 
    • Work with Development Director on budget management and fundraising efforts
    • Outline and execute program evaluation for future planning and improvement
  • Coordinate farmer education
    • Determine learning goals of RGFP farmers and farmers in the SLV, when applicable
    • Host trainings, educational events, and field trips
    • Lead reporting efforts to funding entities when appropriate
  • Outline and deploy educational workshops and opportunities for general community
  • Develop self-led education opportunities at the Farm Park for visitors and youth groups
  • Lead efforts on education-related reporting and storytelling
  • Help expand online education at the Rio Grande Farm Park
  • Work with Outreach Coordinator to advertise educational programming to public
 

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Bilingual Spanish-speaking candidates strongly preferred
  • Valley native a plus
  • Familiarity with the San Luis Valley and its unique challenges
  • Background and experience in youth education
  • Background and experience in food and/or social justice
  • Knowledge and interest in topics including regenerative agriculture, youth development, food justice, environmental justice and health and nutrition
  • Creativity and ability to think outside the box and the status quo
  • Familiarity with Google Suite and especially Google Sheets
  • Strong ability to work independently, but also collaborate when needed
  • Ability to build relationships with education community in SLV
