2023 Flower Crew Bumbleroot Organic Farm

  • Date Posted November 22, 2022
  • Location Windham, ME
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description Bumbleroot Organic Farm is a certified organic vegetable and flower farm located just 10 miles from Portland, Maine. We grow vegetables and cut flowers for our CSA, farm stand, and wholesale accounts. Our mission is to connect people from our community with the land and food that sustains us, and to strengthen our local food system. Job description FULL-TIME FLOWER CREW
40+ hours a week
April, 2023 - October, 2023

Monday - Friday (occasional Saturday)

Overview:

This position will include work within Bumbleroot’s entire field operation with a focus on flower production, flower harvest and bouquet-making. It will include some vegetable production tasks as well, particularly in the shoulder seasons. You will participate in all daily activities on the farm including (but not limited to) seeding, transplanting, weeding, trellising, harvesting and processing both flowers and veggies. You will also be expected to set up irrigation, wash totes and flower buckets, make bouquets for our flower CSA and market, pack wholesale orders, and assist with both flower and vegetable production. There is potential for CSA pick-up, farm stand, and delivery driving shifts.

We sell our certified organic flowers through our flower CSA, farm stand, and to wholesale flower customers (florists, grocers and floral designers.) We grow over 150 varieties of cut flowers, each with their own production techniques and harvest standards, so a high level of focus and attention to detail is a must for our flower crew members. We harvest blooms from April through October; in peak season multiple days per week are spent harvesting, counting and processing thousands of stems for many hours at a time. Work is fast-paced and physically demanding, and as gorgeous as flower farming is, it can be monotonous and tough on the body. Efficiency, focus and quality standards are highly prioritized at Bumbleroot.

Requirements:

We are seeking candidates with at least one full season of flower farming experience or multiple seasons of vegetable farming experience on a commercial farm. Experience with cut flower production and making bouquets at a commercial scale is preferred. Must have a strong interest in flower farming with a willingness to learn the production specifics and quality standards of all of the varieties we grow. After a training period, you will be expected to navigate a pick sheet, participate in record keeping, move rapidly from one task to the next, and have a clear understanding of work space organization and workflow.

We value communication, positivity and kindness in our workplace. Our flower team is small but mighty, and we rely upon open communication, collaboration, and organization. We are looking for individuals with the following traits:

  • positive attitude and enthusiasm
  • strong communication skills
  • strong organizational skills
  • eagerness to learn and retain information
  • focus & attention to detail and quality standards
  • openness to & comfort with receiving feedback
  • ability to work at a fast pace
  • self-motivation and willingness to take initiative
  • ability to work with efficiency both independently and in a team setting

Must be able to lift 50lbs. and be on your feet for 6 hours straight. We do not offer housing so reliable transportation to and from the farm is necessary (we are located 25 minutes from downtown Portland), along with a valid driver’s license for operating farm vehicles to/from fields and on delivery routes.

Work Environment & Schedule:

Bumbleroot strives for a culture of inclusion and connectedness. We are able to grow and learn better with a diverse team. You will work closely with the Bumbleroot Flower Manager and Bumbleroot owners. Some tasks will be done independently, but most time will be spent with either the flower crew or the vegetable crew.

The job will be 8-9 hours a day, 5 days a week (Monday - Friday) with a one hour unpaid lunch break. In addition, you will be expected to work one Saturday per month. We pay overtime for every hour worked over 40 hours per week, and we offer paid time off among other farm benefits (a workers compensation package, food and flowers from the farm etc). Start times are early on harvest days (Tuesdays and Fridays start at 6am), and we work in all weather conditions.
