Job description

Seasonal Farmer Job Description

Arthur’s Point Farm in Ghent, New York seeks a full-time seasonal farmer to assist with growing, maintenance, and harvesting operations. The farm is a native bare-root nursery of trees and perennial wildflowers focusing on agroforestry, climate-resilience, superior genetic selection, and ecological design. We also produce biochar and biochar compost as part of a broader effort to recycle nutrients and sequester carbon from our forest lands and restore disturbed areas with productive tree species. We use organic, biodynamic, and regenerative agriculture practices.  

Responsibilities: The seasonal farmer will join a small farm crew propagating trees and wildflowers, making biochar and compost, planting and managing tree crops, and possibly implementing ecological restoration projects for clients. Tasks include, but are not limited to, propagation, soil preparation, seeding, planting, composting, mulching, irrigation, weeding, mowing, harvesting, packing, invasive species management, and equipment maintenance. 

Qualifications: The ideal candidate has a strong interest in growing their knowledge and experience practicing both proven and innovative climate-friendly farming methods, enjoys outdoor physical work, and is excited about our approach and what we do. They have a positive attitude, are punctual and reliable, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and comfortable working both individually and as a member of a team.  

We seek candidates with the following specific qualifications:

  • Previous farming experience; 
  • Capable of demanding and repetitive physical labor, including lifting 50+ pounds safely and repeatedly and performing well in all weather conditions;
  • Strong oral communication skills;
  • Ability to work efficiently, independently, and also cooperatively as a member of a small team;
  • Farming involving perennial plant, growing, and propagation desired;
  • Experience operating and maintaining farm equipment (tractors and tractor implements, wood splitters, augers, chainsaws) desired; and
  • Respect for safety guidelines and willing to follow safety procedures (including shifting COVID-19 protocols).

Supervision: This position reports directly to the Farm Director. No supervision of others is expected.

Compensation: $15-20/hour depending on experience; minimum 40 hours/week with expectation to work longer hours during intensive planting and harvesting in the shoulder seasons of Spring and Fall. Training will be provided for all tasks and equipment as needed. 

Duration: March - November 2023, with possibility of permanent, year-round employment.
