Farmshare Austin’s mission is to grow a healthy, just and equitable local food system by increasing community food access and cultivating new farmers.

About Farmshare
Located on a 10-acre certified organic farm in Southeastern Travis County, Farmshare Austin cultivates the next generation of farmers and increases community food access. We offer opportunities in a learning community for adults who are interested in launching careers in organic and sustainable farming. Over 75 percent of the produce grown on the farm goes directly to our Fresh for Less Mobile Markets and Curbside Delivery, a weekly, reliable food access program serving 22 zip codes in the Eastern Crescent of Austin and Travis County.

Since 2014, we have graduated 86 adults from our 20-week Farmer Starter beginning farmer training, of whom nearly 80% are working in agriculture or an agriculture-related field.

Since fall 2016, Farmshare’s food access work has focused on Fresh for Less Mobile Markets and Curbside Delivery, a partnership with local government that provides a weekly, reliable source of reduced price, farmers’ market quality fresh produce and nutrient-dense grocery items to low-income customers in the Eastern Crescent of Austin and Travis County.

Job description
Job Summary:
Farmshare Austin seeks a Finance Manager responsible for managing the financial activities of the organization, including financial analysis and planning, accounting operations and reporting, budgeting, financial and regulatory compliance and reporting, and grants administration. The Finance Manager provides guidance to senior management and supports the Board of Directors through clear communication of financial reporting and analysis, and interfaces with external parties on financial matters, including accounting services and bank relations. All accounting functions are handled by a two-person team, which includes the Finance Manager and a part-time Bookkeeper. An annual financial audit is performed by an external accounting firm. As part of a multifaceted organization, this position plays a critical part in the long-term growth and success of the organization. The Finance Manager reports to the Executive Director. 

A new position, the Finance Manager will oversee Farmshare’s financial operations. This, in turn, will contribute to Farmshare’s overall financial sustainability and ability to carry out our food access and beginning farmer training mission.

Essential Job Duties:
  • Oversee the routine generation of timely and accurate internal and external financial reports, including monthly and annual financial statements

  • Oversee the accuracy of the organizational accounting records and maintain the chart of accounts

  • Provide financial analyses and reports

  • Effectively communicate and present financial matters to senior management and the Board of Directors

  • Provide useful financial insights to help make decisions about formulating and implementing sustainable strategies and programs

  • Perform month-end closings and bank reconciliations

  • Perform journal entries

  • Maintain depreciation schedule, including quarterly journal entries

  • Lead and monitor the annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the Executive Director

  • Manage the annual audit and tax process, working closely with external auditors

  • Manage budgeting and finance for grants and contracts, developing budgets and budget narratives, and working with staff on progress and completion of spending

  • Ensure financial information that substantiates compliance with donor designations, restrictions and conditions in grants and contracts

  • Manage the creation, improvement and implementation of financial policies and procedures for the organization in line with nonprofit requirements

  • Oversee implementation of Records Retention Policy

  • Manage financial reporting for major grants

  • Collaborate with other departments within the organization on process and systems improvement for reporting and accounting

  • Establish and monitor adequate internal controls

  • Supervise and support part time Bookkeeper, working as a team to accomplish the above tasks


Qualifications and Personal Characteristics:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting preferred

  • Minimum of 2 years of broad finance and accounting experience in a nonprofit organization with a budget of at least $1 million

  • Solid experience in coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, grants administration, payroll and benefits

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate and present complex data in a user-friendly and concise manner to individuals with varying levels of financial acumen, including staff, board members, and any other key stakeholders

  • Very strong attention to detail and precision

  • Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which support and enable sound decision making

  • Fluent in the use of GAAP and FASB financial guidelines

  • Knowledgeable about federal and state nonprofit taxes and registrations

  • Excel at or are comfortable with using Quickbooks Online accounting system

  • Strong Excel skills and proficiency with common integrated applications such as Microsoft Office and Google Workspace, and the ability to learn new programs quickly.

  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to perform multiple tasks and meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy and quality.

  • Flexibility in working with a shared leadership structure and in cross-functional teams

  • Ability to work well independently as well as to function effectively as a member of a team

  • Welcomes other points of view and ideas, recognizing and embracing different and contrary perspectives with curiosity and encouragement

  • Farmshare is located on a 10-acre farm in Southeastern Travis County, approximately 10 miles east of ABIA off Highway 71
  • This position is a hybrid of onsite and remote

 Benefits:
