Stone Barns Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit farm, education, and research center with a mission to catalyze positive change in our food culture. Since 2004, we have been driving innovation in regenerative farming practices and mindful food choices that benefit human health, strengthen communities, and protect the environment. Job Title: Crops Farmer

Location: Stone Barns Center in Pocantico Hills, NY

Supervisor: Crops and Greenhouse Managers

Employment Classification: Full-time/Salaried, Non-Exempt

Frequency of Pay: Bi-weekly

Salary commensurate with experience: $46,000 - $56,000/year

Schedule: 5 days, will include weekends and some evenings.

The Crops Farmer will work within a team of farmers, researchers, and other experts to further the development of a resilient agro-ecological system, explore symbiotic relationships between animals, plant-base, and soil ecology, and contribute to farm innovation and experimentation. Ideally, we're looking for someone who might be interested in staying more than one season and is looking to grow with us. Responsibilities:

• Support all production activities associated with outdoor vegetable, grain, and flower cropping systems

• Assist in field prep, planting, cultivation, irrigation, maintenance, harvesting, and post-harvest processes

• Follow and maintain relevant crop records for field production 

• Fulfill harvest lists and delivery schedules 

• Assist with programs, projects, and tours as assigned

• Work with management to ensure the cleanliness, organization, and safety of all production areas

This is a highly physical role. While performing these job duties, the employee is regularly required to see and reach. The employee is regularly required to sit, walk, and stand for long periods of time (e.g., up to 8 hours or longer) and to don appropriate personal protective equipment in response to COVID-19, including face coverings. The employee is required to use dominant hand coordination for simple grasping, pushing/pulling, and fine manipulation. The employee is also required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, bend, squat, kneel, and reach above shoulder level.  The employee may be exposed to extreme temperatures, dust, dampness, moving machinery, food allergens, and cleaning agents. Due to the nature of the farming industry, the employee may be required to work longer hours and varying schedules to reflect the business needs, which may include overtime, weekends, and holidays. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Preferred Skills/ Knowledge:

• Expertise in organic vegetable production at scale, with 2+ years of relevant experience (required)

• Proficiency with agricultural equipment, including tractors and implements

• Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively and cooperatively with management and staff

• Ability to focus on quality and attention to detail when performing repetitive tasks

• Ability to bring enthusiasm, initiative, and a good attitude each day, especially during peak season

• Ability to follow detailed directions, ask questions when needed, and retain information for future reference

• Desire to learn

• High levels of organization; excellent communication skills

• Proficiency with Google Docs and other planning recordkeeping software

• Valid driver’s license with a reputable driving record, as driving company vehicles is a component of the job

• Located in or near Pocantico Hills, New York 10591: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (required)
