This position will take a leadership role, overseeing the success of all distribution operations. This role will work across our warehouse and trucking operations to ensure safe, quality local foods from The Common Market network of local farmers and ranchers reaches schools, hospitals, and community organizations who count on us to access healthy foods. You will be joining a small, dedicated team and work side-by-side senior management in a way that encourages teamwork, cooperation, and productivity. This role is fully on-site and located at our warehouse in Houston, Texas.

 

Operations Manager Responsibilities

Local Food Inventory: Responsible for aligning product availability and inventory with customer needs. Ensure timely farm product pickup and receiving to fulfill customer orders. Review incoming orders and manage the schedule and work flow of the warehouse and distribution. Label and quality check all outgoing products. Communicate local food availability with our farmers and our sales team.

Equipment/Facility Management and Maintenance: Share in the oversight of equipment, the facility, and maintenance.

Solving Problems: Conceive, propose, and initiate solutions to improve service, customer engagement, storage and operational flows. Foster day-to-day operational excellence. Manage key performance indicators and identify innovative action plans to address gaps.

Technology: Responsible for understanding and utilizing The Common Market technology, this includes:

  • Business tools (Salesforce, FoodConnex, ADP, Elite Extra, Samsara and data analysis)
  • Microsoft Office (primarily Excel, PowerPoint, Word)

JOB DUTIES

Farmer Relations & Purchasing. Lead Common Market's purchasing relationship with local farmers, create purchase orders in FoodConnex in accordance with plan. Ensure prompt farmer payments in support of our commitment to improve farm viability. Hold farmers accountable to Common Market quality standards.

Inventory. Complete inventory processes from Receiving to ultimate Delivery to customers. Oversee and execute physical inventory count. Implement measures to ensure accuracy in the inventory management system. Reconcile Purchase Orders with Receiving records and Farm Invoices. Minimize shrink and spoilage.

Oversight of Trucking & Warehouse Operations. Develop daily truck routes and dispatch to trucking team. Coordinate pickups and deliveries to warehouse with suppliers and vendors along with warehouse packing schedule.

Food Safety. Operate facility in a manner consistent with our Food Safety Plan. Prepare for annual audit. Leadership role in Recall, Crisis Management and Food Defense/ Food Fraud teams.

Facilities. Coordinates, oversees and/or manages repair and maintenance work assignments performed by technicians, vendors and contractors performing building maintenance, landscaping and janitorial work. Reviews work orders to ensure that assignments are completed. Responsible for facilities inspections and reports.

Requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Spreadsheet and Word Processing software, and ability to learn Common Market technology and programs. Must have excellent computer skills.
  • Ability to successfully engage and lead individual and team discussions and meetings.
  • Demonstrated experience fostering positive working relationships with people of diverse cultures.
  • Capable of working with peers and associates from other departments in a proactive and constructive manner.
  • Ability to work in a disciplined manner and capable of following established procedures, practices and comply with local, state and federal regulations.
  • Ability to manage the pressures and stress associated with a deadline-oriented atmosphere and customer service issues. Demonstrates skill in making independent decision in support of company policies and procedures in a timely manner.
  • Able to regularly lift 50 lbs
  • Experience in production or distribution of produce/perishable foods is preferred
  • Availability to work Saturday or Sunday if needed
