Real Organic Project, a grassroots farmer-led non-profit, seeks a Regional Organizer to join our team. Real Organic Project runs an add-on certification program for farmers committed to integrity within the certified organic system. We currently certify over 1,000 farms in North America. We also organize a yearly symposium and undertake a large variety of consumer and farmer facing educational efforts. Whoever fills this position should feel passionate about creating change within the food system and working hard to support real organic farmers. We pride ourselves on being a small organization that gets big things done. This position is full time, salaried, and is a permanently 100% remote job.Job description
The Real Organic Project Regional Organizer will support all aspects of Real Organic Project’s certification program. This will include reviewing farm applications and inspections along with actively working to recruit and reach out to new farms. The Organizer will spend a significant amount of time talking to organic farmers and retailers/distributors about our program. Because we are a small organization everyone is expected to pitch in on all aspects of our certification and educational work. Successful candidates will need to be comfortable spending at least 10% of their time traveling annually - and up to 50% during the growing season. Salary: $66,500-68K (depending on experience)
Job Summary
Regional Organizer:
- Act as Real Organic Project’s primary recruiter in your region - actively seeking out and talking to farmers both in groups, and individually.
- Assist in farm application reviews
- In-person inspection of approximately 60 farms per year
- Manage on farm media collection during farm visits
- Actively work with farms post-inspection to use the logo/spread the word about Real Organic Project
- Manage regional center planning and outreach with a broad community of retailers (coops, natural food stores) and distributors of organic food, and nonprofits
- Establish and maintain conversations about collaborations and recruitment with partner agencies in your region
- Actively seek out ways to promote Real Organic Project through in person and media platforms (write articles for newspapers, appear on podcasts, etc.)
- Assist with development opportunities as needed
- Assist with other anticipated, and unanticipated, projects as needed.
- Think and act creatively to find opportunities for the Certification Program to be successful in your region
This role is an excellent opportunity to work with a well respected organization to have a significant impact on the US Organic market. This position will be largely self directed and will provide the opportunity to continue to build out a program while working with a diverse group of stakeholders. Basic qualifications
- 3+ seasons experience on organic farms
- Knowledge of farm certification programs
- Strong connections within the organic farming community
- Knowledge of the natural and organic foods retail space
- Previous experience working in a startup environment and/or an environment that requires significant independence and self motivation
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability and willingness to travel at most 20% of the time, especially during the growing season (travel costs paid by Real Organic Project)
- Working proficiency with a wide array of data management and online communication platforms
- Valid driver's license to travel to farms and/or conferences
- Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Comfort engaging with people with opinions that may differ from your point of view
- Preference given to candidates based in California, the Northeast, and the Midwest
