About Just Food
Just Food is a non-profit organization that connects communities and local farms with the resources and support they need to make fresh, locally grown food accessible to all New Yorkers. Just Food provides regional farmers and food producers, CSA organizers and everyday eaters with the resources and support they need to establish and experience healthy food systems—in every neighborhood.
Since 1995, Just Food has pioneered and championed the proliferation of sustainable food programs, including CSAs, community-run farmers’ markets, and farm-to-food pantry programs. Just Food serves thousands of New Yorkers by forging partnerships between local farms, neighborhood groups, and consumers, and by providing urban communities with a framework for growing, and knowing, healthy food. Position Description
Farm Communications Intern (May 2013 - Nov 2013)
Just Food’s CSA in NYC Program connects vegetable farmers with NYC groups to establish CSA distributions throughout the city. To create strong connections between farmers and members, communications is important throughout the growing season. Weekly updates of on-farm activities are engaging and informative however the busy season precludes some farmers to keep this communication current. The Farm Communications Intern will work with the Farm Network Coordinator to connect interested farmers within our network to:
BEFORE SEASON

Contact participating farmers on a regular basis (weekly to monthly) to check-in and collect information about what is happening on the farm
DURING THE SEASON

Research other farm websites to get ideas for what works well (blogs, newsletters, facebook).

Work with 4-5 farmers to develop ideas and timeline of what to post for the season

Work one-on-one with farmers to collect stories, pictures, logistics, etc.

Developing updates and posting them on time.

Write up the information collected for the use by CSAs in their newsletters and to post on farmers’ websites, blogs or facebook pages.
Qualifications

Fluency in speaking Spanish & translating to written English

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with farmers and program staff

Enthusiasm and some knowledge for farming, agriculture and CSA a plus

Experience in the use of social media
Time Frame
-
Ability to commit a minimum of 8-10 hours a week for a minimum of 6 months, ideally until the end of season. Volunteer will have the option of working from home or at the Just Food office.

Regular meetings with the Farm Network Coordinator to help guide the project.
