Job description About the role:

The Bakery & Prepared Foods Category Manager curates and maintains a selection of delicious, responsibly-sourced and competitively-priced products in those categories. This is accomplished through close management of individual producer and distributor accounts, building relationships with new producers, and determining product mix and pricing.

The Bakery & Prepared Foods Category Manager works closely with our Inventory team to ensure smooth day to day purchasing and receiving of product, as well as with our Merchandising team to coordinate how product is sold in our online marketplace. The role also offers the opportunity to build out the early stages of our in-house prepared food program to complement selections from external partners.

Your responsibilities:
  • Meet in-stock availability goals within the Fresh Bakery & Prepared Foods Categories

  • Manage purchasing activities: place orders and/or coordinate with buyers to ensure optimal availability levels

  • Meet target margin goals for those categories

  • Research and onboard products and producers to ensure optimal product assortment in marketplace

  • Coordinate featured product promotions between producers and Merchandising team, contribute to the visibility of local food businesses in the Bay Area

  • Work closely with the Foodhub Operations team to optimize product storage and handling

  • Communicate and resolve any producer behavior, reliability, and compliance issues

  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications:
  • Associate’s Degree or higher

  • 3-5 years relevant work experience in the grocery industry, preferably with purchasing and/or production experience in the relevant categories

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Outstanding communication and time management skills

  • Strong negotiation skills

Relevant Skills & Experience:
  • Experience managing relationships with retail food manufacturers, preferably in Bakery and/or Prepared Foods

  • Experience in purchasing and account management, preferably in Bakery and/or Prepared Foods

  • Familiarity with top products and brands

  • Deep knowledge and understanding of quality standards, certifications, regulations, trends in the food landscape

  • Existing relationships with brand representatives a plus

  • Understanding of and experience with margins and profitability

  • Very strong written and oral communication skills

  • Proficiency in Google and Microsoft Office suite software (i.e. spreadsheets, presentation, and word processing software)

  • Experience utilizing databases and analyzing reports

  • Ability to engage with new tools, offer constructive feedback, and contribute to continuous improvement
