Job description What We Are Looking For:
FoodCorps is seeking a highly skilled and proven leader with experience building and operating national organizations to help lead implementation of our new strategic plan that will guide our work through 2020. The Senior Director of Programs is a new position at FoodCorps and this person will play a critical role in furthering our work to achieve program scale, fidelity and impact across our national network of field staff, nonprofit and school partners, and AmeriCorps service members. Working in partnership with the Vice President of Programs, the Senior Director will oversee all direct service operations, supervise our three Regional Program Managers, and lead the rollout of FoodCorps state offices (currently one, growing to four by March 2017, expected to be system-wide by 2020). Successful candidates will be mission-driven leaders with a passion for national service, performance management, and building diverse and effective teams both in-person and across geographic distance. This full-time position will be based in FoodCorps’ Portland, Oregon office.

Who You Are: You are passionate about FoodCorps’ mission and excited to develop the systems and management infrastructure needed to operate a high-quality direct service program in schools across 18+ states. You bring proven experience working in mission-driven national nonprofits and are excited by the challenge of achieving scale; impact, sustainability and systems change through your work. You are self-motivated, detail-oriented and comfortable juggling multiple projects and tight deadlines. Coaching and managing diverse individuals and teams, ushering organizations through change, and developing internal processes and systems to achieve success, are what fuel you and your work. Primary Responsibilities:
Develop the program management infrastructure and systems needed to evolve and operate a large-scale, high-impact national program
  • Oversee the design and implementation of reporting structure between new FoodCorps field staff and our national office.
  • Assist in the development of new state-based program positions and lead the design and delivery of hiring, on-boarding, training and culture building for new state staff.
  • Serve as thought leader in restructuring the headquarters-based program team with the goal of creating an efficient, focused, and highly effective operation.
  • Assume direct management of existing program team including three regional program managers and a program associate.

Develop a culture of performance management across the program department

  • Work collaboratively to develop processes, systems and trainings aimed at increasing FoodCorps program quality and impact at the school and student level, while preserving the ability to adapt our program to the diverse contexts and cultures in which we operate.
  • Leverage data and evaluation findings to inform program development and service member training and support.
  • Develop a culture of learning and performance management with a focus on providing best-in-class training, coaching and support to school based service members.

Serve as an internal leader in helping FoodCorps continue our path towards programmatic scale, fidelity, quality and sustainability

  • Ensure strong financial health of FoodCorps through oversight of service fee collection--$1.3M for the 16-17 academic year.
  • Partner with VP of Programs to help implement the FoodCorps strategic plan that will guide our work through 2020.
  • Develop a strong team culture with a focus on successfully navigating continual evolution in program design and implementation.

Provide superior relationship management to FoodCorps state-level and community-level partners

  • Work collaboratively with the program department to ensure positive and mutually beneficial relationships with existing FoodCorps state partners in the states we serve, and steward those relationships through changes in program design, delivery, and geography.
  • Develop due diligence process for assessing quality and alignment of strategic partnerships and alliances that interact with FoodCorps direct service program.
  • Develop a national framework aimed at supporting FoodCorps state staff’s ability to engage external stakeholders in helping to achieve scale, sustainability and systems change in the states where we serve.
Skills of the Ideal Candidate: 
Proven experience working in a leadership position in a multi-site organization, with strong preference for experience in a national organization
  • Strong skills managing a remote workforce Proficiency in PowerPoint, Excel, Google Docs and Salesforce preferred
  • Enjoys building teams, coaching employees and celebrating success
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, data driven, learning organization
  • Adept at building and managing relationships with external stakeholders
  • Detail oriented, with strong organizational and analytical skills
