Farm Apprenticeship Sylvester Manor Educational Farm

Company description Sylvester Manor is a 243-acre historic farm, plantation and  estate reborn as a nonprofit educational farm on Shelter Island, NY. Our mission is to cultivate, preserve, and share our lands, buildings, and stories- inviting new thought about the importance of food, culture and place in our daily lives. We currently raise 3 acres of organically grown vegetables. The produce from our farm feeds 120 CSA families and stocks our farm stand. We also raise laying hens and pigs. Internship description Farm tasks include, but are not limited to:
  • greenhouse seeding
  • field seeding/transplanting
  • helping with the CSA and farmstand
  • greenhouse work
  • assisting with irrigation
  • weeding and cultivation
  • harvesting vegetables
  • post harvest handling of crops
  • working with other apprentices and WWOOFers
  • some help with animal chores
  • helping with various non-profit activities

There will be organized educational opportunities both on-farm and in conjunction with other local/regional farms, including a grass-fed beef operation that is leasing a portion of our property.

Preference is given to folks with 1-2 seasons of farm experience. Apprenticeships run from April 18th through November 1st.

Applicants must have a positive attitude, excellent communication skills, work well with others and have a passion for working on a farm in a nonprofit setting. This position is paid.  

Compensation includes a very competitive monthly stipend, housing, food, and an educational allotment (towards conferences, workshops, etc.).

The area is beautiful and surrounded by beaches and hiking trails. It is truly a wonderful place to be in the summer months. Hiking, biking, and kayaking are just some of the activities available.
