Internship Harmony Farm WV

  • Date Posted January 03, 2017
  • Location Morgantown, WV
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Internship/Apprentice
Company description

Our Philosophy:

We strive to share the highest quality, most flavorful and healthful vegetables.  To this end we believe that quality begins with what we put into the soil, how we care for it, choosing varieties that are renowned for vigor and flavor (we are always trailing new varieties too), good cultural techniques, proper post harvest handling and storage, and love.  We practice a biologically based form of agriculture, where we see the crops we grow as part of a greater system for which we care.  In addition to this we use only Organically approved products and abide by the Organic standards as much as possible.

Harmony Farm was established in 2012 and has doubled in size every year since!  We will be selling our produce at 3 farmers markets and grow food for a 50+ member CSA.  We believe that good food is a right and we strive to provide as many people with our organically produced nutrient dense veggies, chicken, eggs, and honey as possible.

Internship description

Harmony Farm is hiring 3 fulltime employees for 2017 season.  Pay is depending upon experience but starts at $600 per month plus Room and board.

Interns will work 5 full days (typically 8-6pm with a 1 hour lunch break, although this varies with the weather and farm needs), and one additional market day (normally 5-6 hours) with a regularly scheduled day off.

Interns will perform tasks essential to the function of our 3.5 acre market garden including seed starting, soil amendment, composting, making compost tea, planting, harvesting, market sales, weeding, irrigation, fertilization, pest management, high tunnel construction, season extension techniques, some basic pasture based animal husbandry techniques, record keeping, basic financial management, as well as food preservation and producing value added products.

S/he must be able to work in all weather conditions, at a fast pace, and be able to lift at least 50 lbs repeatedly.  S/he must be enthusiastic about working and learning on a small scale beyond organic farm, be willing to work in all types of weather conditions, and be capable of working well with others as well as independently.  We assume a great level of trust in our workers and expect this trust to be repaid with personal responsibility and a strong work ethic.

Education is a key component of our Internships, although we believe strongly that the best education comes from experiential learning.  This will be supplemented by readings, access to a growers library (as well as a few key texts that you receive as part of your education), instructions, as well as visits to nearby farms.  We believe that knowledge is power and that to succeed in agriculture you need the understanding of the how’s and why’s in order to make informed decisions in your future.

In addition Interns will receive Free Vegetables, and a  glowing work reference upon successful completion of the program,  Our farm is suburban, located 15 minutes from downtown Morgantown (home of WVU), where there is plenty to do.  The area has excellent day hikes, hiking/biking trails, rock climbing, and kayaking opportunities.
