Snug Harbor was founded in the early 1800s as a charitable retirement home for sailors.  Today, the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden is a vibrant arts center and botanical garden, serving 500,000 visitors per year. Located less than 1 ½  miles from the Staten Island Ferry and easily accessible by public transportation, Snug Harbor’s stunning 83-acre campus features 26 architecturally significant buildings, numerous botanical gardens including a traditional Chinese garden and a Tuscan garden, and a 2 ½ acre working farm. Job description

Snug Harbor Cultural Center seeks a Full Time Seasonal Farmer to support the daily operations of our Heritage Farm.  Qualified candidates should have experience in small plot intensive urban agriculture or on a rural or peri-urban production farm. Candidates must have familiarity with organic practices of crop production and have the confidence to meet production targets. The Farmer will work closely with farm staff, apprentices and interns, and report directly to the Heritage Farm Manager.
 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist Farm Manager in all aspects of propagation, direct seeding, and transplanting, cultivating, thinning, weeding, harvesting, processing, and post-harvest handling
  • Assist with apprentices, interns, and volunteers
  • Assist Farm Manager with harvest assessment and restaurant list delivery
  • Assist with irrigation of the farm in early spring into early summer
  • Maintain quality control of all crops for different markets
  • Assist with weekly farm stand and pop-up farm stands as needed
  • Ability to perform various farm labor in an efficient and effective manner
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions
  • Approach farming with a positive, “can do” attitude

QUALIFICATIONS

The qualified candidate for this position must have experience in:

  • Organic vegetable production growing for market, CSA, and/or restaurant
  • Greenhouse propagation and season extension
  • Small plot intensive gardening, crop rotation and inter-cropping
  • Soil fertility management and composting
  • Facilitating or instructing farm skills to youth apprentices and volunteers

Salary will be commensurate with experience.   This is a full time seasonal, hourly position.
